Hey, long time reader. First time posting.
Im in the market for a truck. Up til now I've been a company driver. its been good to me, but I see much more potential in owning a small business and going o/o. I've been looking around at trucks, talking to other o/o's I see around. I run roll stock loads and they run heavy 40k- 46k.lbs. I got two trucks I'm looking at a Pete 379 and a freight shaker classic. Both 94' with each just over a million miles. The Pete has a fresh overhaul and the frieghtliner has 100k on its overhaul. Both have great service records and no accidents. I'm looking into these trucks over a brand new or new-ish one simply because I think I would be able to save more money and be able to bank enough for a large down payment say 3 years from now. That's irrelevant to my question. Which is if I keep up regular maintenance, and take care of it. How many mile could I expect before having a major issue. I'm not a super trucker. I avg about 2000 miles a week. Only because I go home on the weekends and run the 4 state area. No bs. I would appreciate some experienced answers. I'm not expecting 500k miles out of an older truck with an o/h engine. But realistically what do you think I could get.

Also if I were to switch up to a newer on in 3+ years. What kind of value is a trade in worth on a truck with that many miles.

Thank you. I apologize if I sound new or anything , and appreciate any answers.

    Some other specs if necessary.
The Pete has a cat c-15 and the frieghtliner has a Detroit diesel. Both 13 speeds.
Alao the other reason I want to switch. All our trucks are 10 speeds. I would prefer a 13.

If the inframe was done properly(using OEM CAT or DD parts) there is no reson why it wouldn't go 500,000 miles on the engine. I'm a Pete and CAT man but I'd probably tell you to go with the Freighthliner/Detroit because you just can't beat a Detroit for fuel mileage. I drive an older truck also (2000) and you have to remember there a lot of things that start to act up/wear out after 10 years. If you are mechanically inclined you can fix a lot of the small things but if you are running to a shop all the time it will add up FAST. After 10 years or so classic styled trucks seem to bottom out on pricing and stay there. In my area a 10-15 year old 379 is around $15,000 maybe $20,000 with a rebuilt engine with papers. Guys ask for more but rarely get it. Freightliner classic maybe knock 3-5 off of that.

I agree, and I too am a Cat man and would probably recommend the Detroit also as they are pretty well bullet proof. The miles on an overhaul is really a crap shoot, I always expect 600,000 and hope for a million, but anything can happen at any time. Good luck.

I'd go with the detroit. With 100k on it, it's been broke in so your fuel economy should be stabilized, and any of the fresh bugs from the rebuild probably identified and corrected. It's a good engine, and cheaper to work on than a CAT, imo.

Either way, I'd get a dyno and oil sample on the candidate of your choice.

Thanks guys. Personally I'm a cat, and Pete man as well. With the overhaul do they still put out their top potential. In all honesty I'm also leaning toward the DD like vision mentioned. It's already broke in. I am mechanically inclined. The only things I can't do are major repairs.

I love an old hood. I'd prefer a 10 year old truck vs a newer on. They've got character.

Side question. When dealin with fuel tax. Do you save your receipts and pay it every quarter through your CPA, or do you have to figure out what you bought where and cut checks To each state, or to whomever. I mainly buy fuel in MI/ WI. Occasionally IN, but only if its absolutely necessary.

You sign up with IFTA when you purchase your plates and you pay quartley through IFTA with a sheet showing how much fuel you bought in each state and how many miles you ran in each state.
One payment check to IFTA and they divide the money for you.

Thank you floghtline. You're answer was the best I've gotten for fuel tax. I tried reading a bunch of stuff about it. Trying to do as mich research as possible, so i dont dive in an then screw myself because i dont k ow what to do. So running this area mainly (Michigan, Indiana, Wisconsin, Illinois) occasionally ill go south as a favor to my dispatcher, but for the most part I run MI. Normally I fill up in Howard city after coming out of manistee. To all my customers in Detroit, owosso, Plymouth, and into Indiana. I've got all my routes to a t that bypass scales and stay almost within my paid miles. Would it still be a good idea to keep filling up in Howard city. I usually do it every other day to op off. I know once I'm a o/o I have too watch how much I'm buying so I don't have too much money in the tanks. But is it best to fuel up in MI with the prices in the other states I run. I know I've heard Indiana is a state to avoid. For the most part right now I've seen fuel from 3.89-4$ a gal up here. I fuel in Howard city because we get a big discount. And my fuel spot in WI is one of ours. So it's much cheaper.

I have a 2000 379 e model cat 13 speed with 3.70 rears. Right now where I sit the truck has 1,601,700 miles on it and has never been opened up. The injectors and water pump are the only thing that's been replaced since new. Serviced religiously every 10k miles. Uses no oil and minimal blowby. Half time empty half time grossing over 90k. With proper maintenance a cat will run forever. Oh and am also running the 6999 injector codes putting a shade over 600 HP to the ground.

What do you run? HH? Sounds like a ###### rig. See there lies the reason I keep going back and forth. A cat will last forever. Like you said. DD are great engines as well. I hate options haha
