When i was younger i was a hot tar roofer & shingles , it's hard work , it was good for my body staying in shape & keeping the edge , when decided to try trucking out , my father was upset with me ,sayin he didn't raise me to run from hard work or doin what i had to do , he didn't have alot of respect for this profession & my only defense was to claim making more $ for my family .....i agree this is a lazy mans job or so it appears i should also say & some drivers are lazy ....my mission is still the same , im not as quick as i used be but on the roof tops ,but i can get old with this job still hold my value & productivity as long as i take care :yes2557: of my cdl & drive safe , i can work for anyone i choose , i didn't go the O/O route , it just seemed like too much head ack , everyone is different tho , im sure those op guys have learned to keep their ducks in a row & makin a buck :yes2557:

Hi bigdogpile, me too, although I haven't driven in 8 years, I too, wish I'd have done something better with my life. When I started in the '70's, I had a gas. I couldn't believe I got paid to do that. Then, marriage, kids, house, I literally couldn't quit, and that's when it just became a job. My O/O years in the late '80's, early '90's added a little steam, (with my old Pete below) but after my ex threatened to leave me, I went back to a company job, but after being an O/O, it just wasn't the same. My wife left me anyway, and I always regretted selling the old Pete. Now with all the regulations and crazy drivers, I doubt I will ever go back in a truck again.

Started at 49, after 20 years as a self-employed contractor. It was something I always wanted to try, and it's relatively easy to get into. I think the industry values "older" drivers coming into trucking. Usually more mature, responsible, less drama and many years of driving experience.(non cdl)

Too funny of a subject. Why in the world would you go trucking at 50. Shouldn't you be looking at sitting on an island somewhere fishing? As long as the driver can handle the truck I guess its alright. You hear of the senior drivers plowing into crowds all the time in cars. Scary thought. At 65 you should be taking a nap.
