Read this section of TTR for 6 months. Then you will have a good idea.

Me 2 and 1/2 years, then I went to LO.

I opened my MC after after 8 months of being a company driver, the first 6 months were the toughest, but then it gets easier.
I had an experience in other business though and knew how to put numbers together.
My buddy on the other hand, was a company driver for 3 years, then bought a truck and leased it to a company for another three years and then finally opened up his own authority.
Running just brokered freight, I make almost twice as much as he does and even after explaining numerous times how this whole spot market works, he still does not get it and keeps waisting his time on some BS loads.
So in my opinion if you are good with math, have good logic and lots of common sense, all you need is 6 months driving experience

    Dave_in_AZ Thanks this.

Too many variables. My dad started out O/O right from the start back in 1981 at 21 years old but today isn't the world it was back then. Being able to do all repairs, big and small helps a lot though and knowing when to let the truck sit and not run it just for fuel money. What works for someone else might not work for you
