5-10 years. People that run trucking companies and drivers will be in for a rude awakening.

And Waymo (Google) has been working on it for over 15 years. We got two things out of it.
One is smart cruise control with lane keeping, as long as lanes don't do weird things like in a construction zone.
Two is a car that has a higher than average wreck rate on roads mapped so well the car knows within an inch what the road does.

In both cases they are nowhere near level 4, much less the media hype of level 5 vehicles.

Driverless trucks are at the same place in technology development as the Wright brothers were in aviation.
We're seeing the first clumsy efforts at designing something that will take many years to make workable.
Will it happen? Sure, some day. Progress is inevitable.
Check it out in about another hundred years.

Don't tell Dave. He's got enough problems with Snow. Don't know if he can handle Lizard People. :)

On a side note, an acquaintance's husband drives for a bottled water company. According to her, according to him, the trailers are loaded by an automated system. No forklift drivers.

When they have true driverless trucks they’re going to have issues with freight getting stolen.

Here, Elon Musk gives his opinion on the OP's question. You should watch videos of him talking about AI. It is scary. He talks about humans and serving different parts of the brain that I already figured out. I agree with him. Only I think people do serve that part already. That is your hell. That agrees with everything said in the Bible 100%. That is what God has always been trying to get through to us. Do watch several videos of him talking about AI. I didn't go all the way through this one. I need to get going this morning. Heading back to Kansas. But in this subject of this thread. Definitely! Watch more of Elon and others warning of AI. It's scary.

Yeah, trailers stolen from tractors that don't stop at rest areas or truck stops. I guess they can be stolen while in motion like something from the fast and furious.
