Yes back in the 80s the trucking field was great. At any time of the day you needed help a fellow drivers was willing to help. If you were broken down on the highway someone would pull over to see if he could help. If you needed directions or had a question all you needed to do was ask over the CB radio and you would so many drivers willing to help you. Yes you would have to pay out of your pockets for lumpers and tolls. And yes I had 2 log books.
How much better was it back in the day

That isn’t totally gone. Some still have that ethic.
Yesterday after I left my last pickup I heard somebody on the CB ask “do you have help coming?”
Just before I crossed the Bay Bridge I saw who he was talking too. There was an FLD parked on the eastbound side with the hood up and every body panel a different color, which to me explained why the first driver didn’t get a response.
Back in 2004 or so I broke down on US-58 in Virginia, blew the turbo on my Big Cam. After I told the boss about the brand new excavator now covered with oil he agreed with my assessment and got to work on my rescue.
While I was sitting there, several other drivers in dump trucks stopped and asked how I was doing, along with a few county mounties.Blue jeans, AModelCat, Brettj3876 and 3 others Thank this. -
your exactly right. i do remember back then, drivers helping each other. but the way things have been for the last 20 or so years, i forgot all about the way it was. for over 20 years, the attitudes and wave of foreign drivers, i lost the vision of the old days. some dont want to hear the word foreign, but sorry, look around.
i wonder why foreign drivers dont drive trucks in their own country. im confused.Blue jeans, Cat sdp, Opendeckin and 2 others Thank this. -
Some of them are some of the most arrogant d-bags I've came across. I'm totally fine with foreign people coming here to better themselves, but for the sake of God speak the Kings f'n english. That's allBlue jeans, autopaint, Wargames and 3 others Thank this.

Blue jeans, Cat sdp, AModelCat and 1 other person Thank this. -
Loose leafs and if ya see us a little wobbly around state lines it's bc were scratching down the miles. God forbid if drivers had to do that now. My oh my. Glad i got a tiny taste of what the old days were like

If I could go back to the 70's and drive 90's trucks, I would never leave that decade.

Notice how no one wants to go back to those times with a current DEF-cattle-prod-and-tattletale truck...
Blue jeans, Vic Firth, Wargames and 7 others Thank this. -
