Looking into getting my CDL and going to work in either the ND or TX oilfields. My goal is to make as much money as possible for a few years while I'm young and single. I want to work as much as they will let me and save up every cent I can. I will use that money to start a business when I come back home. I hear the money driving trucks is very good in the oilfields. How much could I really expect to make with no experience? Also how much could I make after I have some experience?

I started out @ 16$ hr with no experience.
Worked my way up to $25.
long hours, no log books because its on a reservation, drove 15-18 hrs a shift.
extremely cold weather, -10 to -30 at its worst.
    Exposure to petrochemicals.
Potential h2s positioning which can kill you if you don't get out in time.

depends on how much crap you can handle.
most guys do 3 weeks and take a week off.
Broken down trucks are more common, rds in nd are unpaved, huge potholes etc

Dog-c, how long did it take for you to get a raise? How much overtime would they offer? $16/hr X 40 hours = $640 per week...Although I'm sure you worked much more than 40 hours a week.

Cao I did 100 hr weeks.....but burnout is inevitable so it's good to stick with 12 hr shifts 75 hr workweeks.

and yes I've seen companies give work to those willing on their day off. My best advice to you is to BE THERE in the area so you can be hired, don't tell them you're in phoenix or Los Angeles etc etc.

Dog-c, thanks for the advice. So at $25/hr and all that overtime you had to be making 6 figures, right? Also how long does it typically take to get a raise?

25$ is standard provided you have experience.

the ones maki g six figures are those who own trucks and get 125$ an hour

Ok, I forgot you don't work every 4th week. So you had to be grossing around $90k right?

Yes if you can handle it. But also there is a lot of drama in ND with other drivers, gossip, companies that aren't ethical, a lot of the rules we follow as otr drivers aren't adhered to in nd, especially on the reservations. Companies will take advantage of the drivers and work them excessively.

What are you looking for specifically?

I'm looking for a job that will pay me a lot of money. I don't know much about the trucking industry but I see more opportunity in the oil fields than I do working a dead-end job for $30k/yr at home. So if I find a job at $16/hr and work 75 hours per week with every 4th week off I can gross $77k for my first year? I think that sounds like a great opportunity.
