You only fail as a IC when you don't run the miles. If the truck isn't rolling you aren't getting paid. In fact, you're losing money.
You can ask any IC from CRE who complains about not getting the miles the following:
~ How many late loads do you have?
~ How many claims do you have?
~ How often do you refuse loads?
~ How many accidents do you have?
~ How many log violations do you have?
~ How often do you communicate with your DM?
Any of these can contribute to low miles.
And if you run into one of these drivers at a terminal or truck stop, this question shuts them up usually:
~ Instead of sitting here with a full drive shift and a empty truck complaining about the company, why aren't you bugging your DM for a load? Blow up his/her inbox.
The failure rate is high, but most failures are self induced. As a solo IC, I made 400-600 a week, plus driver unload pay. So yes, it is possible if I can do it. You just can't expect to make a ton of money to start with. No one does.
How much did you really get paid as a lease owner?
