My dad used to work for yellow. 1986-7 ish till he retired in 2008. The good I can say is that yellow helped raise my family of 8 and my dad has a full pension. They took a 15% pay cut to save the company and from what I hear, they are doing better. My dad told me back in the 80's when he worked for McLean he was making 33, 34 cents a mile while non union companies were around 15-16 cents a mile. It was nearly impossible to find a non-union job that could come close to union pay. Today average union pay is what? Like 55-60 cpm? Most non-union is maybe around 40cpm with exp? Union pay used to be double non-union pay, today it's still 1.4-1.5 times more, not including benefits . Union jobs have fallen from being astronomically better to "just" a lot better, to the point that a few non-union jobs can compete with some lower end union jobs. In most Instances I'll still prefer union over non-union work, my non-union job just happens to be a good fit for me.
already gone Thanks this. -
that about sums it up, it used to be night and day, not so anymore. but unfortunately, i wouldnt run ltl freight either way, i expect road drivers to become a thing of the past with the subcontracting going on and the new upsf agreement that basically red circles road drivers, and has cheaper lh drivers ready to do the job for .25cpm less....

I drove for Tyson Foods Springdale Arkansas. Would still be driving for them if I hadn't relocated to the Portland, OR area. (they weren't able to get me regular hometime in Portland as I needed) They are an excellent company, friendly and the dispatchers dont play games with you. I averaged 3000-3400 miles per week OTR. My last year with them was $61,000. Their equipment was well maintained and never had any problems with DOT. Preplanning was good and although I would end up taking my 10 hour break at a number of their plants to pick up loads, they kept me running consistently. I think you get back what you put in if you know what I mean.....

70-80k? What Company and where is it?
-
Most likely a LTL company

you can haul chemicals in a tanker, or run steel on a covered wagon and make that much too. BUT, companies like linde and praxair are hard to get on with, and to make that much hauling coils is going to require being out all week....

I also think ltl is gonna be gone someday. Right now I'm doing pretty good in ltl (USF Reddaway) and grossed 71,000 in 2013. The most money I ever made was working O/O for North American Van Lines in 1999 $240,000 gross. I didn't do that many loads but it was kind of stressful work moving people. I miss my 1994 Freightliner FLD.
already gone, Radman and conquest738 Thank this. -
I'm a gas hauler in california. One of our drivers cleared 100k last year. He's the kinda guy that works his max hours and takes his ten and starts when it's up.
