I just got myself the 2015 freightliner cascadia. I also got myself a brand new reefer. I live here in California in the San Joaquin county, which has lot of produce loads. I'm thinking about hauling to Regina, Canada. What brokers would give good loads to Canada ? I guess the big question is how much should I be making per month?
How much does a owner operator with his own authority expects to make?

Probably you will learn those answers the hard way. That's how any operator that's making it gets the info you're seeking. Not going to figure it out from a book or on a forum. A hot lane today might be cold tomorrow. If you're not leveraged and have some cash in a pile maybe you'll figure it out. If not you'll probably fail like many before you. That's just how it goes. No-one ever wants to hear the truth though. And too #### many dive in headlong without a clue.

HI, thanks for the reply . Yes, I do have about 20k saved up for emergencies. I have the maintenance paper work ready. I'm just curious that how much can I make, or how much should I be making. I mean I have the brand new equipment with full warranty. I have entity set up. I also got my personal corporate lawyer. I'm hoping to save 8k per month? Is that even a reasonable number to devise in my head?

Your scenario is not easy to pin down. Too many variables. Your asking for the impossible here, with what information you have given.
Brokers are hit and miss. Many good loads are seasonal. Just no way to tell you, till you try it and see if it works.
rollin coal, karma123, jbatmick and 1 other person Thank this. -
during produce season up to 4bpm going north and 80cpm or dead head going back to cali, Arizona, nevada

Let's say you turned 20k per month on average, subtract fuel, insurance, taxes, truck and trailer payments, maintenance and maintenance savings fund, how much would you have left to live on? That might give you some idea of what you will make. Also, getting Canadian Authority and licensing will be an added cost to consider as well.

Why not find the answers before you bought the truck?
skateboardman Thanks this. -
Lmao,Well Driver-YOU CAN EXPECT TO MAKE A MILLION DOLLARs if YOU WANT
Fact is
It doesnt matter what we make,Its how much we KEEP AFTER expenses are PAID,what your cost per mile to run that truck makes all the Difference in the WORLD,if it cost you $2.30 a mile to run that truck, and you get $3.00 a mile well theres your MAGIC NUMBER you looking for.it depends on the set up what freight their hauling, some trucks get 5mpg some get 7-9,tire sizes,Rear End Ratios,Terrain they Run,Dedicated or Not,How much Deadheading they do,Truck Notes,Trailer Notes,Plates,Insurance,IFTA
-ALL THIS STUFF MAKES A DIFFERENCE,and if you dont think it do MAYBE YOU SHOULDNT OWN A TRUCK JUST YET,setting a company up is easy and not that Expensive i can do that with my eyes closed, its the Start up Cost, the Day to Day Operation of Managing your Business that Matters,Dealing with Brokers, waiting 30-90 days to receive payment,Broker Credit Score,if you go with a factoring Company to receive money quicker,How do you have your Business setup,S,C,LLC,have a Do Not Haul List, and a Good Broker List,
Having that Money on Hand, which you say you have and thats good but if you take cheap loads, thata b gone quicker than you know, perhaps go back and do some Due Dilegence & research i know guys cost per mile is $1.25 and make $3.00 a mile and thats there MAGICAL NUMBER,
So you see how this MAGIC ANSWER your looking for can be difficult,Every Owner Op runs there Business Different
Some guys run Reefer,Skateboards,Containers,Then some run rail Yards,
No Trailer to pay for and Average $3,000 a week after Expenses they net $1,200-$2,000 a week take home
But every op Needs and Wants are Different some Guys need to stay close to home more than others, and pulling Containers fits their Operation better than being full blown OTR,
Example:If you dont have much Expenses and if you keep them Minimal Example say $15,000 for all Expenses for House hold and you have $20,000 put up for Maintenance allready, well if you make $70,000 a year,to me that might be GOOD,but to the next Op it may be a bad thing, they may need to clear $90,000 or $120,000
To each their own,
No one is just gonna Lay out the KEYS TO THIS INDUSTRY,YOU HAVE TO LEARN BY TRIAL AND ERROR
jUST LIKE WE DID,even if someone gave you the GAME!!! that still dont mean that you would run it like So
Id suggest go Lease on with a Outfit and get the hang of it.
What you need to do is find out your Expenses,Your cost per mile, and Find out how to make that MAGICAL NUMBER every week,if not youll be selling that truck, and be on another Post Ranting about The Trucking Industry aint this and aint that
BEST OF LUCK TO YOU!!Last edited: Dec 24, 2014
