You should pad the box you keep the plastic gas cans in. And keep them strapped tight. The vibration going down the road will rub through that plastic fast.

Sailors use this kind of thing, sometimes called a power pack but not always. Often a little diesel so they use the same fuel. If you went in that direction you could use a little marine diesel like a Yanmar or one of the Kubota-derived ones and just run an alternator/compressor, etc directly. Like an APU but you can choose which accessories and how big.

one of my friends bought from wrecking yard engine part of carrier apu( paid around $1000) .it's Kubota z482 diesel and 6kw generator inside. he has little modified it to run without original apu control. he has installed 16 btu split a/c to work with it.

I started a post and got most of these heavy belt bucklers riled up and the portable generator guys are so scared to stand their ground. You heavy belt bucklers, keep spending your 10-12k on your tripacs and rigmasters while we smart ones who like to save without idling keep doing our thing.12 yrs in the game and never been stopped by DOT for this or cited. The only thing I am doing is changing the location of the plastic tanks.Who said the gen set will idle for more than 6 hrs?.Yes, I do have a carbon monoxide monitor. You cant beat .2 gallons an hr gasoline compared to .7 -gallon of diesel burned on your big truck. Not to even mention, the amount of soothe the idle causes that in turn, wears the motor. You heavy belt bucklers, save me your #### worries about my set up and keep throwing your bankroll into those APU's and it's maintenance cost..This post will remain unforgettable for people looking for a setup like mine.
    Arios!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

men please use search button and you will see there are more than 20 thread like this here. it's not an unforgettable thread. I can find for you nice used tripac for $2500 with low hours. not necessary to pay $12k if you don't know how to use wrenches or don't know how a/c system works you better stick with your setup. Maintaining Tripac is expensive for some guys but not for me or for others who has knowledge.

I am under the impression that this is done on trucks other drivers drive for you, or am I wrong?

The other thing is this, idling isn't going to put that much more wear compared to running under a heavy load.

AND those plastic cans are illegal, sorry but get into an accident and have one of them throw gasoline all over the place, then you may look at a hazmat cleanup. The DOT is clear about the what can go on the truck, plastic cans are not certified for that.
