This driver is right on the money about what its like out there. He's referring to OTR drivers.Anyone with a family should think long and hard before pursueing this carreer. You can't just get home when you want.Suppose you have an illness in the family like this driver said, you could be a thousand miles from home. Its not that easy for companies to get you home unless you take the next airline flight out. Many days weekends you'll be sitting at a truckstop bored and wishing you was home with the wife and kids. You really do need to be 100% sure you wanna do this.OTR trucking is a lifestyle, you live and breath on the road and never the same place twice in a row.One week it could be trkstops the next week at the shp or receiver and restareas. Its a very routine lifestyle. You drive, stop for the night, eat, shower, sleep get up and do it all over again. You need to look at trkdriving not as making money but is this something you really wanna do.You're not going to be wealthy doing this. The new folks just coming into the industry is in for a rude awakening if they ecspect to get rich.

It is not disagreement with what he is saying in principle, but it is pointing out he is being very melodramatic.

It is the difference between saying - That dinner I had last night sucked, the food tasted like crap, I would not eat there again... and I ate dinner last night at the absolute worst restaurant on Gods green earth, The food was not fit to feed to a dog, the chef, if you can even call him that should be pumping gas somewhere instead of cooking peoples food and the whole #### buisness should just he shut down because that crap sucked.

Both denote displeasure with dinner, but one goes a bit more for the superlatives.

That is my point about the video, he is a bit over the top.

I call BS. Now he talks to slow for me to watch the whole 16 min, but......You can play torrest and still make decent money. If you run hard you might need to take a 34 somewhere. why not somewhere nice lol. I have friends up and down the east coast i see somewhat regularly. Last spring I was in CO so I went sking for the day. There is a balance between money and having a good time on the road. Taking a day off here and there wont kill your bottom line. As for "you have to drive at least 600 miles a day and 11 hours". 11 is the most you can legally drive not the least. Many of us average 400-500 per day and still make a great income. As for missing important events, a decent company will get you home for them and for emergency's, you can always buy a plane ticket. He makes it sound like unless you run 3500 miles a week your not gonna make it. That simply isnt true. He also says companies that hire new drivers don't pay much. That's not true either. I worked for TMC and made 64k my first year. SO, imo, he making this lifestyle sound a lot worse then it is.

he is spot on. new drivers it's tough. work up to experience / pay.

YOU MADE 64K first year with TMC i call BS. That crap OTR company can't dictate union steel mill work ethics to make you 64k. 1st year

ETA: Yes i live in the biggest steel producing county in the usa

Then you must be doing it wrong. I grew up on a farm and from there Basic Training was a vacation, I got to sleep-in for an hour, and they gave us a 10 minute break every hour. I spent 7 years in combat arms (11B/13F). Truck driving is hands-down the hardest job I ever had. Taking and maintaining unwavering "conscious control of the attentional spotlight" and protecting oblivious motorists hell-bent on committing suicide by semi for hours on-end requires constant mental effort, and is exhausting.

I wish someone would explain to me how some drivers manage to enter their $250,000 trucks in the "Working Truck" category of truck shows.

That's a good point. Most the drivers haul general freight. You don't get rich doing that. But say specialized freight makes great money. It really depends on what you haul. Most the companies are general freight and pays about the same give or take a few extra cents per mile.[Look at some of the trks and trls you see out on the road, they have beautiful equipment and not what you see every day on the road, you can bet they get paid good. But the mega companies, they all pay about the same some more some less miles QUOTE=gpsman;3714449]I wish someone would explain to me how some drivers manage to enter their $250,000 trucks in the "Working Truck" category of truck shows.[/QUOTE]
