Ranger,
Lets just say that they were getting paid $20.00 per hour with O/T after 8 hours (I don't know what master freight pays). Take 20% away. You are now down to $16.00 for straight time and $24.00 for O/T. What does an average OTR driver actually work during a given day? Lets just go with a conservative 11 hours. The Union driver would make $200.00 for the day. How much do you think an OTR driver makes during that 11 hour period? I will even give you 10.50 hours of driving with a fifteen minute pre and post trip.
I think it still is a better deaL to work Union. Care to disagree?
Drive safe
How much of a pay cut would you accept?

Ranger, it's always a better deal to work union. I have worked for two different unions, once as a driver and once as a machinist and if I have a choice I will always pick union. If possible I will return to driving as a union member. Let the other guys cry about taking pay cuts and whatever else the companies like to do. Let them go union and protect their family and paycheck and if they dont want too, quit cryin about wages and not being able to make it.

Most days I get in around 600 miles in 10.5 hours of driving...for me thats $240. (gotta keep the door closed to do that though)
Now if you're running around on the east coast, I see your point completely...hourly is better. -
You wouldn't? What exactly would you do?
Tell them "No, I'm not allowing that"?

Whoops, found a better job. Bit harder with the economy down but not impossible.

I think Rangers point is, you're dealing with political scum. As the majority of Americans are, Union or not.
Everybody is being asked to take a reduction in pay. The only people excempt from those cuts...are the "leaders" aka Union Boss and political dirtbags we call Congressional members.
Union or not....the little people bear the brunt of the cuts. While the elite, vote themselves raises on a regular basis to maintain their lifestyle. -
Yup, and Id tell them that by quitting.

I don't blame you, but I would prefer to have a new plan in place before I started living off of my savings for an indeterminate amount of time.

I've been working off of a 10% cut for the past 2 months and it sucks. Can't do anything about it. Just have to tighten the budget at home until things get better. I can't quit, where are you really going to go? When starting a new job, it takes 6 months or more to truly start making the money you made at your last employer unless you really had a crappy paying job before. And the real kicker is, my company is asking us to recruit 15-20 drivers to run the northeast. I don't think so!
jlkklj777 Thanks this. -
We haven't had a cut, but going into the third year without an across the board raise.
Still get seniorty raises until top out.
But at the same time, they have opened up three new terminals in the last year.
Not enough profit for a raise, but enough profit to expand? Doesn't add up.
