How much vacation time can you get as an owner operator in the summer time as long as you work the rest of the year? And during the rest of the year, when is it when YOU take days off? Just to get a feeling of what trucking life is like for an owner operator as far as time off goes. I love trucking but I value the time off I get for other important times too.

Like Les said...as much as you can afford. I plan on taking about a week or two off each month this summer to go truck pulling. Well it actually works out to working 3-4 days a week and pulling on a long weekend. The main thing is keep track of your money and never, never, never cut yourself to close. I (and many other guys I know) have at least 6-8000 in a bank account or stashed under the mattress. Besides that money I try to leave at least 1000 in the checking and no less. If I'm close to those amounts I get out and work my butt off.

those big companies require you to work a certain percentage of the time so that's not true for the owner ops leased to places like that.

yet one more reason I didn't go to schneider

In my day, vacation happened unexpectedly when the truck needed repairs. Also, if you are not an independent contractor but an employee who happens to own the truck, the lease is separate. The trucking company can put another driver in the seat if the O/O is sick or on vacation. They don't need the truck that badly in this economy however.

I run 3500 mi/wk for 3 weeks and go home for 1 wk. I spend the 1st day sleeping and eating home food, 1 day polishing and cleaning, 1 day bookkeeping, 2 days on honeydews, I mow yd. or go to the stores do laundry and check things over Saturday, have a morning of rest Sunday, call dispatch and pack for the trip and take a nap. Go like crazy again.

Yeah ok, this is all making sense.........I like your idea "passin thru" the most. Working 3 weeks and getting 1 week off. But it'll probably a long time till I can afford that kind of deal. Maybe..... I haven't even gotten started yet lol But during the last few summers I did alot of driving and I know for one thing that there's no better place I would rather be than behind the wheel. That is, if I want to make money. In the summer time though like mid July through to the end of August I like to go trekking in the Alaskan wilderness. You know mountain climbing and stuff. Each trek lasts maybe 3 to 5 days? And I'd like to get in about 4 of those treks in for the season before I go back to regular work. I'm thinking I would work inbetween the treks if I had to I have no problem with that..... THAT'S why I always wanted to be an owner operator. To have more time to myself and who knows maybe a real family one day! You never know what may lie ahead in your life. I'm 25 I'm just getting life started that's why I talk like that...lol. So can anyone tell me how long of a commitment to your job working for a company without owning a truck and all, how long do you have to keep up that stuff till you can be an owner operator with the type of lifestyle that I just described? Is it possible? But for how long do I have to work my ### off? I live in Vancouver. Do you think working for a toronto company is a better idea? Because I heard that how much you make not only counts on what company you work for but WHERE your located. You know?
