how long you drive before buying a truck depends on what you want. Personally I say get a few years experience and beat the pizz out of someone elses truck while you learn. It sure beats destroying your own truck. GO read the "load boards" thread and see how he's tearing the hell out of his truck. He bought it with no experience

hey I fix it as it happens.... there's no evidence of ANYTHING!

Anyway vacation... yeah I can't afford to both take one AND stop running. This summer I'm already sending the family down to FL without me. I probably won't get one until the truck is paid off and the insurance is in it's 3 month hiatus (you pay 9 months out of the year). 2 years to pay off truck.. well 22 months now.

I don't know about 3 on and 1 off. Even the most modest split is 1/3 fuel, 1/3 overhead, and 1/3 driver pay/owner dividend. You always seem to lose a couple days or half week somewhere in the month, so basically the first 10 days of the month cover fuel for the month, the 2nd 10 days covers other overhead, you really only make any money for yourself that last week of the month free and clear... if you never work it things will always be thin to nothing.

MM ur right and I forgot to include that. Some carriers do have a clause that you have to be available a certain percentage of the year or month. Schneider has this for the system o/o (or l/o which ever you want to call it). As for the guys like me on the Choice Program you only have go by this rule if you buy your plates off them. Myself and a few others I know buy our own plates and never have a problem with telling them "Hey, I'm taking 2 weeks off." Heck I know of a couple that take a month or two off at a time and then only work about 3-4 weeks at a time.

I usually take of a week in the spring atleast one in the fall and the last two weeks of the year. This year so far has been a little different. I had to take two off in april because I has a new APU put on my truck then I had a hernia repaired. I had to take off this week because I am down in VA for my wifes mothers funeral. I will probably not take anymore time off this year until december.
