Let me ask this, what is the TOTAL CARGO weight you are planning on moving, and what is the TOTAL DECK space amount that you would need, maybe an alt, with THAT truck.

Link to what, the DOT's web site. I don't have a link, I have a copy of an old book that was given to me for 1998 trucks and cars, it was published by the DOT in 1997. Recently I had an enforcement officer tell me what the GCWR of the truck I was driver. He did so because there was a discrepancy on the upfitter's sticker compared to the manufacturer's sticker.

Manufactures put a suggested GVWR and GCVWR, it has nothing to do with the DOT, the only thing they can enforce are tire ratings.

    Really?

Then tell that to all the people who got overweight tickets.

They are not suggestions and if they are then I would love to see a letter from any one of the suppliers or manufacturers stating such a fact.

The DOT has a lot to do with it, so does the NTSB and state agencies. You can get a ticket being overweight, you can be put out of service if you are overweight until you get stuff off of your truck or trailer.

The reason they can enforce axle weight limits is because the same reason they can enforce tire weight limits - for safety. The same reasoning behind the manufacturers who spend millions in making sure that there isn't a catastrophic component failure with components that bear the weight of the load - safety.

They only have axle limits for big trucks (I.e. 20k, 34K etc), if they didn't then every 4 car loaded pickup would be ticketed. .... sounds like you have little to no experience with hotshots.

Oh please, I have more than enough experience in this. I would like you to prove me wrong with something from say Ford or GM that explains if those ratings are suggestions.

A quick call to your dealer will confirm that GVWRs are NOT set by the the DOT, they are recommendations by the manufacturer.

Ok guys here is the finished deal. Went and spent about 5 hours at the shop. The shop guy that gave me he axle sizes was not correct at all. And he thinks he is a know it all lol. Front axle 8500 rear is 19,500. The motor and trans rebuild was almost 34,000 miles ago. Payoff is $31,378 my payments would be $1080 a month. I am just taking up payments. The trailer I am pretty much sold on is a 44ft dove tail unless there is a more versatile combo out there that you would suggest. I am kind of torn on the axles. Was thinking about 3 single 10,000lbs or either 2 tandem axles that would add up to around 26,000 or round about. I would like to keep GCVW under 48,000 which would be way on the max size of anything I ever do. Hot shotting is not all about the weight but its nice when you don't have to pass up good paying freight cause you don't have the equipment. Weight is not what pays the freight does lol. Anyway Curb weight of the truck is 12,800 so fueled up, removed back seats built in bed and my fat butt figure truck weight 15,000lbs to be on the safe side. Now on the math figuring high I have truck at 15,000lbs trailer 10,000lbs so payload max should be around 21,000lbs. What do you guys thing. By the way thanks for the reply's on this. Its not like I have no clue what I'm talking about but talking with others helps you get different points of views and helps if you miss something that maybe you would have not thought of yourself.

OK first I didn't say dealer, I said manufacturer. I have met only a few gm/ford/ram dealers who know enough to answer the question.

Second I didn't say set by the DOT, they get the data from the manufacturer to what the limitation are.

Third, there are no recommendations, these are absolutes for safe operating of the vehicle - if this wasn't the case then there wouldn't be overweight tickets.

If your axle ratings are what you say they are, do you get an IFTA sticker and apportioned plates now?
