The only time I DON'T use mine is when the sound might disturb people (residential, in town ect) or, when roads are icy. Otherwise, it's on ALL the time. The engine brake is for slowing the truck down and service brakes are for emergencies.

our trucks are mainly equipped with engine brakes and hydraulic secondary retarders

retarders are very very powerful, lot stronger than engine brakes but they works well only on larger speeds ( above 40kmh/25mph)

so we use engine brakes at lower speeds or combination of one and other but on lower power always

but always keep in mind to be careful on slippery wet and icy road

Its not going to cause undo pressure on the pistons. The compression and powerstroke have more pressure on the piston than closing the exhaust valve somewhat. They have it engineered right...you have nothing to worry about...not if they are adjusted wrong...ie to tight or to loose...I could see that causing problems. They put more stress on the rocker arm than the piston.
