I'm looking at a Volvo with a VED13 / 2011/670. Its right at 500K and I'm wondering how often you guys would recommend changing oil & filters or standard PM. Thanks.

Do oil samples and change it when the samples say you should. Unless you idle a lot probably around 25k miles.

Volvo has a service at a glance sheet which bases oil change intervals based on fuel mileage. With oil formulas now the old 10k mile oil change is no longer the norm. Using fossil based oils the interval is 15-30k miles. Using synthetic oil does not change the interval I don't care what anyone says. Also Volvo will void warranty on extended services should an engine failure occur. I am not a fan of synthetic oil in an engine for a number of reasons. Synthetic oil in transmissions and differentials is different because they are sealed. Engines have soot that breaks down the oil and actually turns it into an abrasive. That is my dealership advice.
My fleet owner advice is if you know or can find out the last oil change mileage monitor the oil pressure. See what it is at idle, 1000 rpm and at 1400. Hopefully you have 10-15k miles on it. If not wait till you do. Change around the 15k mark and check what new oil pressure is at same rpm as before. That will give you an indicator of engine internals. Get a sample. Use that as a base line then sample every quarter. Using additives like Lucas will give a false reading. Brand is a personal preference. Mine is Delvac. We sell Delo at the dealership. I do not like Rotella at all. As for synthetic if you have any oil seepage like upper gear cover it will make it a full blown leak. As for the intervals I would say 15-18,000 no more than 20k. If you have 5.5 mpg then I would consider 13-15k if you have good oil pressure. The D13 is a solid engine and has very few issues with the rotating assembly. Just stay on top of your maintenance.

^If I get less than 6.5 MPG I'm gonna be HUGELY disappointed. I've never been a fan of synthetics either.

Don't know how volvo does it, but I've owned Detroit's that came from the factory with a bypass filter for extended drains. As long as you follow a strict oil analysis program the warranty was not effected.

With our 2008-2016s Volvo, motors and cummins we do every 15k even tho they swear that you don't have to change it for 25k on the newer ones. We don't play that we stay pulling hills
