I met a driver some years ago who was about 80 years old. He said that he has been working harder since he retired that ever. Back when I first leased to Landstar, I met a driver at orientation who had just redone his Peterbilt. He pulled a step deck. He told me that his son was upset that he didn't retire. He said that he didn't know what he would do if he retired. He was in good shape and making money.

I respect people like that guy, even though I don't know him.
One problem, I know some retired Teamster drivers, that started driving again & when the Teamsters found out, they had to pay back all the retirement money they drew from the time they started driving again. They claim they don't remember signing a form saying this would happen if they drove, worked in a warehouse, or any job that's Teamster represented anywhere. Doesn't surprise me though; Chrysler was just forced to rehire the 13 UAW members they fired 2 years ago for drinking and smoking pot during their lunch break.

I have a friend over at my company who's 72 and can run circles (literally run) around guys half his age. When I'm 72, I hope I'm half as limber as he is.

I pulled into a small convenience store to buy lottery tickets, there was a guy unloading plastic milk crates (each crate holds 6 gallons of milk) from a straight truck onto a hand truck and walking them down the truck's ramp into the store. He had snow white hair, my guess he was in his late 60's and was slinging those crate like a 20 year old.

That I worked with, somewhere in his 70s now, he's a logger and still hauls regularly. He has a buddy in his 80s who still runs a 359 with a 1693 CAT and self-loader on it. Neither run day in and day out, but, they do still run.

Most of the guys I learned to drive from are somewhere between they're early 50s and into their 70s at this point.
