Chains, binders, straps, dunnage, etc are usually no problem for most people at all. As mentioned the tarps are usually the issue for someone having problems open deck trucking. Personally, I have issues & can't lift tarps so I don't. I used to do step deck loads pulling mostly equipment so no need to tarp. Now I've moved on to heavy haul & no tarps. If you're concerned about them find a company where you won't have to do tarped loads.
They have a truck for really old flat bedders, wheel chair lift and 287" wheel base: http://www.shelbyelliott.com/vehicl...ner-fld-120-89a81c815dbb70458d49d994cbc115e9/
Go for it! I am 54 years old . Been open equipment for 14 years. Most people that trash it are door swingers who have never done it. It's mostly knowing how to do stuff. Not all flatbed is the same. I tarp 1 of ten loads. some guy's tarp 8 of ten loads. " It's OK to look back , just don't stare "
There's a gentleman who works for my company and has been here for quite some time who is 80 years old. He's got a better ticker than I do and he will do it all, except for the occasional tarping job.
I've seen older guys like in their 60s and 70's tarping and untarping.I tell you what they can put the younger guys to shame.
