I would appreciate some input on this. I am 69 years old, in good health and am confident that I can pass the physical requirements. I am located in Southern California. How realistic would it be for me to pursue a driving job in the trucking industry? Would I be wasting the school tuition?

I know guys that are older than you and are still trucking. So no. You know you're too old when you can't climb into the truck anymore ;)

youd be better served calling a few recruiters and asking that question. while it is true that there are certainly drivers out there that are older, i have no idea what the chances are for being hired as a new driver at your age. id LIKE to say it would depend only on the physical requirements, but i dunno. call 10 recruiters and see what THEY say. i say 10, because you must keep in mind that SOME recruiters will answer the question quickly, but not necessarily accurately.

I am not much on retirement. In my mind, staying active will keep me active. I would work for a number of years, as long as I could, as long as I would be safe on the road (for others and myself). Setting around wathing TV does not appeal to me.

If I were you I'd take up hiking and see if I could wrestle a puma in the foothills. Then again I'm not you and that's a really bad idea. I think you can find employment. If you're ready to work and are in good health (before wrestling a puma) you should be able to latch on somewhere, most companies are happy to get 4 years out of a driver.

I've seen 80 year old men get around as good as a 60 year old. I don't think it's a matter of whether you can do the job as it is discrimination. Companies can hire and fire at will. Many applications hit the trash can and proving age discrimination would be hard. When you are up against some 23 old's which haven't learned all life's lessons, who do you'll think they'll pick? They know they can sucker a young person with low pay where as you are wiser.

That's the only obstacle I see if you could just find a company that will give you a chance. Though I recommend 3rd party training you would probably be a good candidate for a company that trains. That way you won't waste any money because if they accept you into training you pretty much have a job.

It's not a gravy job as many thinks. You work long hours, tight schedules and deal with a lot of ugly sometimes. You have to have patience and be able to put up with a lot and maintain a cool head. Trucking is hard on the body but who cares if you are old. :)

It's great seeing the country and meeting new people but all that comes from a windshield and a truck stop. Sunrises and sunsets were always my favorite thing.

    So you ain't into hobbies?

75 is too old. Just so you know. 69 gives you 6 years to drive. Schools cost $5000 or so. You will make $34,000 the first year and $52,000 a year the last five. You will have to give up your Social Security because of added income but you will come out $$$ ahead.

On the up side, as truckers you learn to pee in a bottle. This ability has come in handy as I got old.

I know a number of men older than you driving. If that is what you want to do then have at it! btw: at a time when an increasing percentage of the population see's sitting on unemployment and welfare as a lifestyle I applaud you for wanting to work.

First of all there is no earning restriction on how much you can earn and still collect full SS as long as you are 66 or older.

I am 68 and still driving, but plan on retiring in August of this year. We pull flats and steps and haul concrete pipe and other assorted precast concrete products mostly on a local basis. I have been with company for 7 years now and like my job and company and have a nice truck. So, all is good. But, we want to get a Airstream and spend some time in the National parks in this country before we get too old. We did a lot of travel overseas when I worked for TWA, so now it's time to see this country.
Good luck in your new adventure.
