How can they waste so much per day is the question that needs answered.

550 tons is 1,100,000 lbs. The population of San Francisco is approx. 900,000....that means about 1.2 lbs. per person per day.

That is just compostable waste, not tin cans, jars, and such. That is a lot per person. We have a compost pile in our yard, and with 2 people in our house, would guess we toss out 2 lbs a week.

I would think that number would be a little less per person because much of it probably comes from restaurants. Not the kitchens so much but from the patrons.

Sorry we haven't been wasteful enough sir.
Next time I go to a store should I buy an entire case of Kraft dinner, and a 20 lb bag of flour, and when I get home, just toss it on the compost pile?
    Will that help redeem me?

The last time I had much of anything to take out there, was when we had potatoes, and the peels of 4 potatoes was in our compostables bucket.
Our friendly fox that visits daily eats a good portion of what we do throw out. We call him Limpy, because he's limped badly for years, must have hurt a leg seriously bad long ago.
He doesn't bother anything, just comes around, sees what we put out to eat for him.
I made pork chops last night, instead of 2, made 5, gave 1 to each dog, 1 each for us sisters, and tossed the last chop off the deck to the area we regularly throw stuff for him to eat.
Do that a couple of times a week usually.

    Boondock and BennysPennys Thank this.

My Bride and I are bad about buying to many vegetables and not eating them in time then have to toss them into the compost.

That and leftovers from restaurants- lots of good intentions but should have just saved the packaging to bundle it up to take home just to throw it out in a few days.

    Boondock and Pamela1990 Thank this.
