How strong is a typical 12.7 detroit engine brake?

I just went down a long grade with my first load after retrofitting a pacbrake compression brake onto my 370hp 2000 detroit 12.7 and I was a little disappointed by the holding power -- it fell well short of the engine brakes in the Maxxforce 13 and DD15.

Now the DD15 is 2 liters bigger and the Maxxforce uses variable vane turbo on top of compression braking so maybe I was expecting too much?

63,000 lb gross 6% grade, 1700rpm, A/C on, engine fan on, engine brake on high, windows down, arms flapping out the window... it'll hold 23mph w/o touching the service brakes.

    Same @ 5% grade is 28mph...

I expected those kinds of speeds at 80,000lb, not 63k --did I expect too much or should I see if something needs adjustment? Otherwise the engine runs great.

Also, I read somewhere not to go over 1800rpm with the jake brake on with a series 60 -- any truth to that?

I was disappointed by the Detroit engine brakes coming out of that Cummins lol.

Mine came with a Jake from the factory but for reference it does a bit better than what you're describing. In the low 60k range it will hold speed on 5% around 45-50mph. 70k and I might have to hit the brakes once or twice. And I've never been over 70k with what I do.

I have also heard that about not going too high on the rpm when using the Jake, makes sense I guess that it might be hard on the valvetrain

Did you have an ISX before? Good God that ISX jake I had in my last truck would about put me through the windshield. The way they designed the jake to work alongside the variable geometry turbo provided some absolutely insane compression braking.

My CAT jake is merely a noisemaker compared to the one in that ISX. But, it does sound pretty **** good making all that noise lol.

better than a CAT or Paccar engine brake,, about the same as the Cummins N14 but less than the ISX

    Looks like I may have a boost leak -- I'm only getting 14psi on high @ 2100rpm:

deja vu? Did I post this twice or did one get lost in transit?

How's that new tune working out? Notice a mileage drop?
