Currently i have a permit and am scheduled to attend truck driving school monday the 29th. I am interested in talking to Gordon Trucking. I don't know how to go about this in the best way, which is why im making this post.

i live in the same city as one of their terminals here in Rancho Cucamonga, so what i want to do is walk into the office and ask if i can attend an orientation. Other then that i dont know what i should or could ask

Have you checked out their web page? Get a little info then go in ask if they hire students. All they can say is no.

I did read their website, the "about us" is vague. They do hire recent CDL grads and are particularly hiring team drivers. Am i out of line asking if i can attend an orientation ( considering my current state, Class-A permit attending school at the end of this month )

I wouldn't think you would be out of line. The only stupid question is the one that wasn't asked. I don't think they are a training company though. I could be wrong. At best they will tell you to come back when you finish school. More than likely you will have several pre-hires before you finish school, so don't jump the gun. Find them here in the trucking company dac report section and ask the drivers there some questions.

I am not at all from the trucking industry, but as a former employer I can say that is the type of ambition ALL employers are looking for. I loved when people would come asking for the job, trying their best to prove all the ways they could be an asset to me and company. In fact, I strongly suggest that you do indeed do this if it is a company you want. Put in the application as well, then call weekly at the same time on the same day just so your application stays at the top of the pile because every time you call someone pulls that app to review it. The more the eyes are on it and the longer it is on the top of the stack makes a HUGE difference in them actually calling you. That is the point you want things to be at, them seeking you and calling you. But to get there you have to do it them first and make it abundantly clear regularly that you want the job more than the people who simply fill out an app and wait for the employer to take the initiative.

This is great general job seeking advice. I've worked in positions that were responsible for hiring in the IT and retail industry, and I can also say that a proactive candidate can often rise above experienced candidates.

Honestly I instructed the 2 people in HR NOT to waste time with people who never made any contact attempts after the initial application, and that procedure also is standard with companies that are desperately in need and do not have revolving doors of warm bodies.

Rule was they had to make at least one phone call to check on the app, then a telephone interview was scheduled from that call to test their punctuality before coming in for an actual interview (with the interview being their second test of punctuality by default).

Request a prehire letter from Gordon !!! Great advice.

Just to walk in and ask if you can attend orientation is not going to fly with many outfits. Orientation costs $ , and they only allow prospective employees to attend.

Getting a PREHIRE ( does not mean your HIRED ) opens the door for you.

    Correct,

it means you look good on paper,

they will dig into your background when you actually show up for orientation.
