Goethels or Outerbridge crossing, but then you have to deal with the BQE. Crossbronx is the fastest way to LI except at night.

    1. Coming from the south, you can come in via 278 (Goethals Bridge), or 440 to 278 (Outerbridge), then over the Verrazano, and run 278 to 495. I don't like to go this way unless going to Brooklyn, as I have terrible luck getting stuck in traffic on Staten Island.

    2. Coming from the north via 87, you can go across Westchester and come down the eastern side via 287 and 95 South to the Throgs Neck/Whitestone. Roundabout, probably will lose time due to mileage increase.

    3. Also coming from the north via 87, you can continue into the Bronx on 87, and take the Major Deegan over the RFK/Triboro bridge to 678/Van Wyck, to 495. Not recommended, major airport traffic this way.

    4. Roundabout, but works SOMETIMES...coming in from 95, you can exit the Cross Bronx, head south on the Major Deegan, which turns into the Bruckner Expressway as it heads back north toward 95. You can then get on either the Whitestone or Throgs Neck from there.

There's more than one way to do it, but the Cross Bronx to Throgs Neck is the most direct, and often the fastest route to LI.

From the West sometimes when the cbe is gridlocked I go around on 287 an cross the tappan zee bridge and come back down 95 to the whitestone or throgs neck. Its been a while so I dunno if theres construction or not. But I always had better luck that way if you end up in the main part of rush our. Granted rush hour is 5am to 9pm there...

Correct on all counts Pound Puppy.

I have been running in/out regularily the last few months and have been useing the GW/CBE in the middle of the night and on weekends. Failing that I have been running 40 miles out of my way and crossing the Tapanzee and Throgs Neck.
