The key to backing is the set up. But no one seems to tell you how to do a set up.
When you wish to back straight up, as at a truck stop, pull down to the row of trucks you are wishing to back into. With your trailer straight you should be about four feet in front of the other trucks. Drive one trailer length pass your hole or just past the truck beyond your spot. Turn your truck away from the line of trucks and head straight away from your hole. One third of the way up make an S turn first to the drivers side and then straighten out. Once your trailer is straight you should be lined up into your hole. Straight back in. Easy Peasy.
How to back. The straight back set up. Use this at truck stops also.

I find this can still be confusing for some drivers as they don't fathom the parts in the back up. What is good to add, is that the tractor is pushing the trailer, using the tandems as the pivot point(and steering with tandems) in the second part of the turn.

You mean I can't just pull up straight in front of the whole and just back straight up ? Well dang something else I have been doing all wrong !!!

Sorry but that was about as clear as mud.
