My husband wwas a driller for 25 years and long story short is a trucker. He is use to driving big trucks with long trailers. The driving part isn't the problem. He was with CRST for about 6 months and they are calling him to come back. They pay more, but not actual miles. He was making more at CRST than he is at J.B. Hunt Intermodal. He is going on his 7th month. He is making between $600-650 a week. It costs him $70.00 a week in gas and will begining to pay for health insurance for the family ($125 a week.) He was trained in 3 days. He has never mentioned a handbook. His days are very long leaves the house at 8:30 a.m. and gets home between 12-1:00 a.m.
What should he be doing to make him more efficient? He is out of the rail yard in Chicago. JB Hunt Intermodal ad says he should be making $52,000.00 a year. Right now they pay 31 cents a mile, about $22 for drop and hook and $42 for live load. He worked today (his day off), so is that expected to make the $52,000? In March mileage is goin up to 33 cents a mile, $24.00 drop and hook and $44.00 live load.
1. Call ahead with estimated time of arrival.2. He starts at 10:30 a.m. and sometimes has trouble finding an empty container. (Any suggestions)3. He has made friends with a driver with 20 years experience.4. Keeps in contact with Fleet Manager. He usually gets 3 loads a day. He does the long hauls. You need 300 miles to get about $100.00 and whatever drops he has. Trucking is so new to both of us. We are looking forward to any helpful suggestions you may have.
Sincerely,
David's wife Jean

I recommend he get the tanker/hazmat endorsements & TWIC, then he can make way over $52K and be home every day or night. Intermodal is too hit & miss with pay. Tanker/hazmat is pretty consistant with pay averaging over a grand a week.
aimhigh, L84AD8 and luvtotruck Thank this. -

I don't know if there is anyway to be much faster at hauling containers. Railroad yards you usually end up hunting for the trailers, or waiting till they get there. He must be doing about a 50 mile del radius if he is doing about 300 miles per day; in Chicagoland traffic that probably equates to 1 1/2 hrs of drive time each way. Then you are at the mercy of unloading docks that take up more time.
He is having to spend a lot of time just getting to the terminal and then back home it sounds like. Even though he is getting to come home and spend time in his own bed, he is not getting much time to relax and enjoy it.
Keep him nutritious food to take with him to eat during his day; he may not have to take a break if he is just staying in the city limits. Yogurt, something in a cup with a straw down the middle can be easily used as a snack; I did yogurt this way years ago in between 2 part-time jobs I had. There's nothing better than a peanut butter & jelly sandwich which can be fixed on pumpernickel even.
Did he do otr when he was with his other job, or was it just site to site?KW Cajun Thanks this. -
Wow $600 a week for 14+ hour days? Ditch JB Hunt and to work for a decent company doing local dry van. There is no shortage of work in this city.
-
That is not much pay for the hours worked and the extreme stress of Chicago driving. It is many times more stressful than OTR.
For pay reference, I also pull Chicago intermodal. I work Monday-Friday and weekends are by volunteer. I get paid $200 every day I work no matter how many miles or hours.

understand dollar amount is important when taking care of family. I have heard the only way u make money off rail yards if you own your own trk. it sounds like your husband don't want to be over the road anymore if he is staying with jb hunt like that. have your husband tried working for those companies like Sysco he would have to unload the truck. though im sure jb hunt have some dedicated accounts have he checked into them. are there any trucking companies close to your home where yo husband can do day cab. look into companies like Estes, Conway, roadway, ups, fedex, companies that deliver gas to local gas stations don't know if your husband have endorsements if not it would be good investment it will open more doors I have a friend that work for Estes he make $22hr since u did the post u will most likely doing leg/finger work for your husband. research it u will find what your husband really want to work if u live in large city u may have depo's like walmart, walgreens, freds, Tyson GOOD LUCK!!!!

Thank you everyone for emailing back. When he was a driller he drove his truck, trailer and rig to the site. At times that would be in other states. Those were called out of town jobs. He does have a twic card that is good until sometime next year. A couple months ago he got his hazmat endorsement. The yogurt snack sounds good, especially if it is Oinks coconut or coffee. My husband won't touch any of it with a 10' pole.
He has heard talk that some of the drivers want to join UPS union. Anyone, know anything about that? If what I saw on line is true their insurance is awesome.
Thanks and be safe. -
Don't know anything about UPS but Old Dominion in Des Plaines is hiring drivers. If he has Haz-mat he is in a good position for that. There is no reason any driver should work full time for $600.
