What's the right way to pull a bare converter dolly behind a lead box? It came up today but I had to plead fng to the dispatcher and leave it at the shipper. Do you connect the red side but leave the blue disconnected?
How to bobtail a dolly?

You would hook it up as you normally would in a set.
-
You only hook up the electric pig tail. You do not want the brakes operable on an unloaded dolly.
-
Just what he said. Only hook the electrical cord. Wrap the air lines so not dragging and connect them to each other and good to go.
-
plus as always, make sure the safety chains are attached..!!!
and DO NOT go like a mad man, as that dolly will be hopping all over the place... -
The proper way is to hook both hoses and the power cord, open the emergency valve "Red", but leave the service valve, "blue", closed, as well as hooking your safety chains. The reason for this is that the air system on the converter dolly is then "charged" and the brakes released, if you were to turn the service valve on, every time you touch the brakes, the convertor wheels will lock up and drag the tires, "no weight on wheels", the reason that you would always leave the emergency valve open is so that the system is charged, if the convertor were to come loose, then the brakes would lock up and bring it to a stop, granted this would only happen during a wreck of some sort, or a structural failure in the rear of the lead trailer, and most likely not then, but you see the theory, also, you don't want to be pulled over with a hose or two just dangling and not hooked up, then would come the DOT Inspection and everything that goes with it.
