I run a GPS for these kinds of situation. I can get better directions than the gps can with a phone and an Atlas, but i keep my gps zoomed out to about a couple mile radius and i glance over at it once every minute or so to see what the road is going to do. If i got a big hill i'm dropping off of and i see we don't have any major curves for the next couple miles we can let er roll. If i see I'm going to be making a u-turn style turn at the off ramp from a mile away i can get slowed down well in advance with no trouble at all.
How to deal with sudden dead man's curves?

You're GPS isn't going to show you that car wreck that has the road blocked, or that bunch of bicyclists out for a ride, or that huge rock that just now rolled into the road!

Big Don Thanks this.
