The threat to gasoline is moisture. Pure gasoline has an extremely low freeze point. And it doesn’t gel like Diesel.

Treating fuel with #1 is an old wives tale, and if I remember, the truck runs poorly on #1. I'd have to think modern additives are much better. Years ago, #1 pump was right next to #2, and we blended it ourselves. I highly doubt you'll find any #1 at any fuel stop. I suppose you could call a home heating oil place, and may deliver, but not for a couple gallons. I did most of my trucking in the north, and only once did I have any problems. Blended fuel always worked to at least -20. Whatever happened to "Arctic Fox" fuel tank heaters? You don't see those much, but I remember guys that had them, never had a problem even in Alaska.

I’d trust #1 fuel long before I’d trust any additives. I’m running a 50/50 blend right now without any additives, zero issues the last week during the cold snap.

I worked for fleet here in Canada and the whole fleet had fuel tank heaters…no issues and always filled up with #2 before returning home…I was always fueling near the border so the #2 was good quality compared to some of swill id seen further south

    Cenex usually has straight #1, a 70/30 and a 50/50 blend

    I’ve had this argument before……

#1 is kerosene period might have some additives in it but it’s kero

I’ve loaded fuel at some terminals when it’s -20F and their premium ulsd is like 70% kero or #1 as you call it .

I would agree to trust #1 more than additives but if they say it’s winterized and there’s no #1 available to cut into your fuel you have no choice but additives.

    And let the truck run…….lol

And I believe the cloud point of kero is like -40F (i forget)

I agree. I am in Western South Dakota (Spearfish area) and did the same thing with no issues and it got as low as -27 degrees at my house.

Many of our fuel stops have #1, and I think most in Montana do as well. I trust 50/50 way more than treated.

Jet A makes a good additive too but I'm not real sure how legal it is. We have a water truck with an old 8V92 that runs better on Jet A than regular diesel. Just for fun our mechanic put some extra gauges on it and other than the cylinder head temps running a little high there was no difference in pressures and temps. It stays in the woods and we try to run it on straight Jet A as much as we can.
