About a year ago, I stupidly got a class D license since I thought I wouldn't go back into trucking. Now I'm having second thoughts and would like to get my CDL again. I have over 10 years of driving experience with my old class A license. So how do I get my CDL back? I would assume I would have to take the road course again but how do I get a truck to do that? I thought about renting one, but I don't have a CDL. I wouldn't think I would have to go do school over again. Any ideas?

Gonna need a truck to do the road test.

Could talk to one of the local schools about it or talk to a local farmer if you know any.

Another option is a local gravel hauler if you can convince them to hire you.

I was in exactly the same boat one year ago. I was living in Arizona and found a driving school that is qualified to give driving tests. I paid them $250 to take the driving test, and $85 for an hour of backing practice before I took it. When you haven't parallel parked for over 10 years you need a few trial runs. Then I took the driving test in rush hour Phoenix traffic. No problem. I got my CDL A renewed and am back on the road. In other words, look into third parties that are authorized to give the CDL A exam.

What state are you from? I did the same thing because I didn't want to go take a physical that was required to renew it, but I was told at the time also that I had up to one year to go get a physical to renew it. Which is what I did after second thoughts before the completion of one year. Anyway, I'm glad I did because I'm back driving again. Moral of the story is never let go of your CDL unless you know you will be too old to drive.

Moreover, if you have been out of trucking for some time you will have to take a refresher course and start all over again anyway. Hence, find a training company that offers a refresher course where you can acquire your CDL again and hold your nose for a year. The cost will be zero if you fulfill your one-year. In any event, even if you do manage to get your CDL back by other means, but, of course, not without incurring a cost, you will still nevertheless have to go to work for a training company anyway until you get that one year of experience. Anytime you are out of trucking for a significant amount of time, you lose all previous seniority and experience and must start all over again. It sucks.

Less than a year, just get it re-instated at DMV. Over a year, back to square one. (as in starting fresh)

Thanks for your replies. I'm in Ohio. It's been less than a year so I'll try the BMV tomorrow.
