You make a good point. I am paying a commission, however I control the amount/cut that the salesman gets paid. You are also right in that many shippers are now buying into the "one call does it all" concept. That is why I was telling him to find the smallest of the small shippers. That is the kind of place where the small, one truck independents still have a chance to get a foot in the door.

By the way, I am currently looking into getting broker authority as my salesman is TOO good. He is constantly trying to outsell our capacity. I am constantly having to tell him "no we can't handle that"...and it is driving me nuts turning down that extra revenue.

    When you do, email me.

I'll be back to owner operator in a few months with my own authority.

I think you are missing my point. For the owner-operator with only a couple of trucks, I can see the need for brokers. But I work for a big LTL company, and I often run into problems with billing mistakes and shipping info on pickups, most or all of which could've been avoided had the shipper came straight to us instead of going through Unishippers or somebody else.

Sure, what about Intransit? Now some thing else I can't remember their name, but they are a big rip off. 50% brokerage fees. Buncha BS. And then they have the gall to tell you that they "specialize in back haul rate freight". NO you specialize in screwing the truck owner/driver is what you guys do.

So bad they had to change their name to stay in business ripping off the new guys to the load boards. All the ones they had jacked before quit using them.

not to be a jerk but you shoulda had answers to those questions before you got your authority. That's why so few make it on there own. it's tough, broers pay slow (or not at all) and because it is so tough the guys doing it are ery tight liped.
you better be good with your money, you will need to make it stretch.

those load boards often have crooks on there preying on drivers. Also you still need to be set up with those brokers in order to load and that often takes a few days to set up so you can't wait untill you are empty to find something. schedualing is my personal weakness by the way.

I can't much help you with the drug testing pools and such. Last time we owned trucks we just went every two years and got one when we did our physicals. Law says 50% of employees a year which if you are the sole emloyee that comes out to every other year. I know now though they want you on a random program. DOesn't JJ keller run those programs?

Not all the brokers are bad. But if you can get set up with a direct account one direction and use a broker on the return you will be ahead of the game. I used to use "cheap and heavy" Robinson alot becuse they have so much freight but I got most of my loads from KLLM, landstar. I did alot for KLLM out of Atlanta office.
I now of one broker right now who pays you the entire amount of the load and then you pay him 10% for his fe. That way you know how much he is getting. I like that business practice much better

The brokers have a little more expense than that.
Besdies if that was all it took to be broker, wouldn't we all be doing it?
