I wanted to resurrect this thread for one reason. Hubby hauled a load for a broker the other day to a small town, and we were looking at about 100 miles dead head to get to another load. While pulling in for his unload, he noticed another company across the street. After unloading he walked across the street and was able to get a load coming right back. And we are now on their list and have another load next week, all set up.

So walking in and shaking someones hand and presenting yourself as a professional can really make a difference. It works much better than a cold call, IMO.

No I was referring to calling on the phone "cold call". Which I've done too. And with some sucess, I might add. But you don't get the warm fuzzy most times doing that, like you would meeting face to face.

Plus, when they see my husband, they can tell he's a professional. And in this case they even got to see the truck and trailer so they knew what kind of equipment he's running.

It's a better presentation of the business all the way around.

Boy I don't know. Coming from a business owners perspective, I cannot stand when salesmen just show up to my business and walk in. In fact I have a sign on the door now "Sales by APPOINTMENT only".

It got out of hand with one walking in right after another.

Well there's a BIG difference in small town hospitality and big city business. You have to know where its going to be received well and where it won't.

But if your a good business man you will have an instinct about that too.

I did some business a few years ago with a nice lady. Her husband and her run a large trucking company. She was one of the companies representatives that went out and got new accounts. Which got me to thinking after reading this thread. That might be a good idea to hire someone who can do the leg work to find new business for you.

Depends on the type of business. The vast majority of my direct freight has come from direct interaction with business owners. By showing up!! My market niche lends itself to this approach; I realize not everyone can do it. But for those that can; DO IT!!
