The Selective Service System was established in 1917 and ended in 1973 after the Vietnam War.

Idk really. I’d check with the bigger farmers. Most of them in south Arkansas needed help. Better be willing to work hard in the sun laying irrigation pipe. My brother worked for farmers for years. He was brown as an Indian.

Some companies with government contract require proof the driver is registered with Selective Service unless they're over the age limit for registering.

All I knew about, at that time, was "Draft Board."

Another friend of mine in Nashville receives his draft notice. He was put in the Marines and sent to Guam or maybe Okinawa, to a replacement company. People getting killed were replaced with those from the replacement company. He told me he saw hundreds come and go and he just sat there and kept his mouth shut. When his time was up, he said, "Hey, my discharge date is here, when am I going to the states to get out?"
Whoever, in charge, said, "Why didn't you say something earlier, we could have sent you to Vietnam."
He said, "My time is up, send me home."
Had no choice, and sent him home.
Now he's retired with a nice fat truckers union pension.
The guy I told you about that was drafted into the Navy, spent his time on an ammo ship in the Tonkin Gulf Yacht Club.
