I drove OTR for nearly 2 years then I decided to quit due to stress. Then I did something really stupid...I surrendered my CDL at the DMV.
My question is how do I get it back? Will I have to start over and go back through school ?

Yep, you are going to have to start all over! Being out of the seat for two years, you'd have to start all over again anyway.

Heck, even my dad who has 30+ years under his belt would have to start over since he's been out of the seat for over 5 years and still has his CDL! That's nuts!

You would have to take a refresher course anyway. You maybe able to just take the written part of the test in order to be re-issued a license and then take a refresher course. Rerun would probably know the answer to this one. I am sure he will chime in on your question.

Maybe, Maybe not...If he wanted to go to work for one of the big bottom feeders, Yeah he'd haf to probably do some kind of school.
If however he took the time to find a decent "mom and pop" outfit that actually know their drivers by name and treats them like human beings, He'd probably be back behind the wheel as soon as his pee test came back.

But if you let your license go...It won't be that easy.

I think I've posted this somewhere before...

Step 1: Move to Alabama temporarily.

Step 2: Take the written test, then go to Reid State Technical College in Evergreen, AL and schedule a road test. It will cost $100 and they provide the truck.

Step 3: Take the road test again and pay another $100... you will pass the second time. :biggrin_25525:

I let mine slip too... it's difficult, but not impossible.

Why would you surrender your CDL?

the unfortunate thing was you surrendered your license, frankly not a very wise thing to do as you now know.

you MUST go through the entire process all over again. written tests, permit, schooling, DMV road test.

and lastly, do you really think the stress level would have "lessened" since you left...??? do you seriously believe that if you couldn't handle the stress "back then", that you CAN handle it now...???? the roads, the 4 wheelers, everything is worse NOW than it WAS when you gave it up....you SHOULD reconsider your plans for getting back into this.....

as stated by another, if your dad did not surrender his license like the original poster has done, then if he can find such mom/pop place, he could start again.

sadly, the whole process must be done all over again....
