I’ve done some reading in the last couple months but read minimal info about the process of getting paid. It’ll be great if anyone can shed some light. When dealing with direct customers are you invoicing the bill to party? How about if you have a dispatch and using a factoring company? Just want to make sure if invoices need to be created, I’ll have that made or whatever I need to prepare myself in advance.

    Don't factor direct customers.

When you start out I suggest a factoring company, once you have a reserve fund where you can operate 60 days without the need of cash that’s when you start billing and saving the 3%.

I'm NOT a computer/office guy in the least but had no trouble making my own invoice template. It's just this simple. Go to Excel or or any similar software (some sort of office software comes bundled with just about any computer) and go to the templates. Invoices of different kinds will be there. I just deleted out the samples and added my own info. Took all of 10 minutes for this noob to make a template.

I just save them titled as invoice number and PO number from rate con and save them to my files after I print. Most of the time you don't even have to print, just email them to customer in PDF. I have never snail mailed an invoice in the few hundred I've made.

Invoicing a customer after a load takes me 5 minutes. I do it in the truck the day I deliver.

Before you factor. Try to get a line of credit, that would allow you to wait for the freight pay.

Factoring isn't cheap and that is your profit.
    Good luck

I just built a invoice template on Excel for billing. Keeps it nice & simple

Edit: i think if you use Turbo Tax, they have invoicing as part of it.

I use quick books easy to manage and view our books. My accountant loves my office for it.

    Search internate for
    ...invoice template....
    Plenty of choices.

Before you get caught in a factoring loop try to get a line of credit so you don't need it.

Best to start with enough dollars saved that you won't need either.

    Good luck.
