If your engine has been set up with a password, and no one knows what it is, a Caterpillar dealer can get in by connecting to the ECM and then getting a password downloaded from Caterpillar factory. I just has this discussion with Butler Caterpillar in Sioux Falls South Dakota. My company parts changer put a password on my ECM and now doesn't remember what it is.

I may be wrong on this but I think there can be two passwords on cats, one is from Cat to keeps owner/drivers from turning up the power and the second one can be put on by a company to keep drivers from messing with the company settings..ie speedlimiter, top RPM, ect. ect.

it's actually three passwords, two are used only by CAT for flash files and fuel settings, the third is used by the customer to keep the driver from altering customer paramaters
