Yea it's not a fun ride. I just had been on it a couple times cuz i chased a tanker out the back side of the climax mine on ute pass and come down 40 off the back road outta the mine. I did it one other time just to show my son the area cuz it's a nice scenic view. I definitely wouldn't recommend it in a regular basis.

I recently drove during a lightweight/high profile advisory across WY. The overhead signs were announcing insane windspeeds. I foundy Windy app. It will show you windspeed at almost any spot you touch on the map. It felt like the wind was direct crosswind and 30-40 mph, notbthe 65-75 mph the signs were warning. The Windy app and MyRadar were showing 20-40 mph. I felt Windy was underestimating by 10-15 mph.

It can still get pretty windy through there... But nothing like 80 does. But if 80 is shut down between Cheyenne and Laramie... 287 will get you around it.

When it comes to wind in WY the only site I trust is thus one...

    WYDOT Travel Information Service (Laramie)

It is directly linked to the local weather sensors along 80 and 25

You do understand those "insane wind speeds" are happening, windy is only showing you averages. Watch that 30-40mph gust turn into a 70+ and a truck go from driving to rolling/sliding in the median.

Final check of CoDOT and WY511 and Windy I ended up going my regular route 287 to 80. Wasn't too bad. When there were sustained rocking winds (mph unknown I'm at just over 68k and my guess is around 45mph but ???) I slowed to 55. Maybe a grand total of 15 miles of that in places between Laramie and Rawlings where I'm currently parked.
    Hope tomorrow is peaceful.

If you are headed west from Rawlins you will be fine... VERY, VERY rarely is the wind an issue west of Rawlins, aside from a short stretch near Lyman.

Yea being safe an slowing down is always the best policy. If ya get too uncomfortable with it than you gotta decide when it's time to park it.
