So, yet another question that's popped into my head...

How would I go about declaring residency or receiving mail if I were to live out of my truck and have no fixed home?

I have family in other states - which gives me a place to stay during hometime - but I'd like to keep my California residency if I can. Would my CA driver's license and a rented PO box be enough? Anyone else here do this? Any tips?

That is what we did. Sold our home put some stuff in a storage unit and got a P.O. Box. If you can get a P.O. Box like at the UPS store it is more like a regular address than a PO Box. They are also more helpful when you are over the road. You can call them to check your mail or do small favors for you while you are away. Ups is just an example I believe there are many similar companies that do the same thing.

Cool. It's just been kind of confusing since technically I won't be living in any particular state, but yet I will need to somehow have ties to one.

I assume you can use a PO Box or UPS address for your driver's license/CDL (the address listed on the actual license)? Same with filling out tax forms and what not?

Do you have any friends or family that live in CA?

I asked this same question about a month ago. The reponses I got were to use a family member's address (which I can't do) or use a P.O box or a box at the UPS store/Mail Boxes Etc. Someone said that you can't use a P.O. box as a home address anymore because the rules changed because of 9/11, but someone else said they still did that. Dunno if it's a specific state thing or some kind of federal law. Guess you can check with your state DMV.

No, I don't actually. I have a few friends, but none I know well enough to ask to have my mail shipped to them.

rayodeluz, I think you're right, it's probably best to call the DMV and ask them directly. I've used a PO box in the past - and after 9/11 - but never for my license or anything dealing with the government.

Depending on where your relatives are, it may be beneficial to use their address. There are 7 states that have no state income tax.

That would be a savings of $5115 on a $55,000 income. Even if I didn't have relatives in a tax free state I would consider the UPS store route for $5500!

Hmm.. nope. All of my relatives live in states with income tax. That's why I'd like to stick with California. Even if taxes are higher here, at least I can maintain residency for when I eventually return to having an apartment or home.

There's companies out there that will hold your mail until you call them and tell them where to send it. My parents did this when they retired and traveled all over. Of course there's a fee but I'd look into it because you won't have a P.O. box. You can check the RV magazines to see where you can do it.

That is unfortunate. Somebody will correct me if I am wrong, but I don't think that a P.O. Box will qualify you for the IRS per diem deductions. IIRC you have to have a "real" home address.

Let us know what the the CA DMV says about using a P.O. Box as an address on your CDL.
