While home this weekend I plan to have a pm done on the truck. Since FMCSA says oil changes should be logged as on duty, do I log on duty during a pm or off duty since someone else will be doing it??

Thanks. We are on elogs but the company owner's wife (who thinks she is the boss) is really "particular" and thinks she knows it all. I have corrected her several times already on logging things correctly. I figured if I logged on duty for the pm she would probably argue with me about it so just wanted to check with some of you.

If you aren't working, how could it be on duty? Last time my truck got serviced I was sitting on my deck drinking beer. How would that ever be called on duty?

That's how I feel too, but FMCSA says any time spent during maintenance is on duty.

One argument with the company owner's wife was about logging time in the shipping dock. We are no touch and she thought I should be logging loading or unloading as on duty. I didn't want to use up my 70 hours that way and wanted to log off duty since I wasn't doing anything. I eventually talked to a DOT officer who agreed with me and said off duty would be the smartest way to log it.

However, since I am paid by the day, I wouldn't mind logging the pm as on duty while I watch Netflix. Lol

I really think you're reading something that I've never heard.of what paragraph from the dot book are you seeing that .On duty is your working not driving or responsible for truck if your not the mechanic and not working on it your not working or responsible for it.

while HOME this weekend...meaning you ARE HOME..

if YOU are not doing the actual work, if YOU are not at the garage, you are off duty. even if you just dropped off your truck at the GARAGE then went home, you are off duty.

now, if you have a boss/owner that requires you to work on your rig on your hometime? then find another job.

if YOU ARE AN o/o......??? just do the darned work and DON'T log it.....

even IF you were on the road, and had to stop at a truck stop to get the oil changed and other PM services, log OFF DUTY and go to the drivers lounge.

You are "supposed" to log maintenance work, but only if you are the one actually doing it. I think you are misinterpreting the wording.

You have to ( Technically ) log DRIVE TIME to the shop and ON DUTY for the time it takes you to check it into the shop.
Once you are free to do whatever you want you can log off duty.
