And during an audit, when the officer compares maintenance records with your receipts and only finds records for the supplies, then looks at your logs and sees no time logged, they can ask WHO did the work. If you say you did it yourself, you just admitted to log falsification. If you claim a friend did the work, depending upon what was done, you might need proof they were certified to do the work. Much easier to show a couple hours on line 4, then at least 34 hours off (because you're home). Do that and it'll CYA without creating any problems with your HOS.

If that is the case, you aren't working on the truck, so the entire topic of this thread is irrelevant to your situation. If you want to chime in and put your $0.02 into a thread, don't offer up bad information when the entire thread happens to be above your pay grade. When you spout off blatantly false information because "what YOU do" has zero relevance to a thread, you appear foolish. The topic is in the motor carrier section, meaning the OP probably is running under his own authority, and is in regards to how his time wrenching on the truck is logged. You don't own the truck you drive. You don't wrench on the truck you drive. You aren't responsible for the authority under which the truck you drive operates. You aren't going to have a DOT auditor paying you a visit to comb through your files. The DOT doesn't even know you exist, outside of your MVR. NOTHING you do in your own little world is relevant here.

    Better luck next time.

I was told that come E log days to just log it as personal convenience when taking the truck to get serviced.

How exactly is taking the truck in for service any different than bobtailing to your next load or any other driving for the benefit of the motor carrier? Personal conveyance is driving the truck for personal reasons, using the truck in the same manner and for the same reasons that you'd be behind the wheel of your car if you had it with you. If you are taking the truck anywhere for service or repair work to be performed, that is NOT a personal reason for driving the truck. It is no different than safety meetings, training, etc...ought to be shown on line 4, even though the carrier isn't likely to care because it really isn't a major issue during audits. Much like a "form and manner" violation, if the inspector really wants to hit you with something, it isn't hard for them to do.

Maybe I'm just lucky but besides fueling,pre/post,and the occasional clean inspection at a weigh station, nothing is logged on duty . Been audited a bunch of times by companies and reviewed by cops; never had a problem

Even loading/unloading is all sleeper birth (as long as its no touch freight)

    (Elogs otr driving)^^

Audited by companies is different than audited by the DOT...and during a roadside inspection, the officer doesn't have access to your maintenance records or receipts as would be the case in the office. By NOT showing time spent maintaining the truck on line 4 (as required by the regulations), you are leaving the door wide open for an easy violation IF the officer performing the audit wants to push that issue.

...and just because the elogs allow it doesn't mean it is in compliance with the regs.
