I have to agree with you.right around the corner from landstar is a company called evans transport.small but good company.hauls a lot of containers out of jax port.My suggestion to the op is to save up around 2k or better and buy a truck and lease it on to 1 of said companies listed here...central fl is iff'y for good trucking money without being an o/o....only other suggestion would be to go ahead and apply at publix.it is hard to get in but hear nothing but good things about em.atleast a few years ago I did.maybe car hauling too....
edit...when I said 2k to buy a truck,i ment as a down payment.there used to be a place out of macon ga that sold used tractors, ocala was another place you can look...

You should be able to make money teaming. Fast loads should pay your company more and if they plan it well and get you decent miles, you are covering the fixed costs better.
Same if you own the truck.
but othersise maybe solo works for you.

I have a sister that could sleep through a nuclear blast. She can fall asleep as soon as her head hits a pillow while watching blaring TV and a brightly lit room. She would be a perfect candidate for teaming as the jamming on the brakes or switching on the jake brakes or the swerving around traffic and the bumpity bump bump of the roads would not deprive her like it does me.

In the 1970s I drove team and brought home at least 700-800/week. Haul cars, it pays 50 cents/mi. I hear Indian River drivers make 800/week at 32 cents. There's always milk to haul.

I didnt read over everything here so forgive me if this has been said already.

I live in Florida as well. Just north of Tampa in Pasco. There is money to be made in Trucking, even as a company driver. Its just a matter of find the right company and being at the right place at the right time. I dont think endorsements mean diddly for your pay scale. Company knows what it can pay out for its trucks and endorsement or not,.. if the truck can only support $.40 - $.42 CPM to the driver, then thats all they will pay.

Personally I think you need to give up on running Team. Be your own man and run your own miles. Find a smaller company (Flatbed cough cough) thats running paper logs. I wont get into the logistics of my reasoning,.. but it should be obvious. You will make more money on your own, doing your own thing. How much money you make and how hard you run is entirely up to you.

I set a goal for myself to try to average at least 700mi a day. This isnt always possible. Delivery and P/U schedules often conflict with what you can write in your log book. You have to be smart about it. Smaller companies often have older trucks that will and do break down. 2 weeks ago I was down for 4 days while under a load. First time in 3 months,. but it happens. Even new trucks have issues.

I dont know what kind of money you are expecting. But I will tell you, I gross on average between $1450 - $1800 a week. Paid every week. Besides the first week I was here,.. my lowest pay was $1140 (Gross). I'm 1099 here and do my own taxes. I see home on average every 3 - 5 weeks. This company is very flexible when it comes to home time. I let them know I want to get home and within 10 days I will be there. Unfortunately its a small company and I dont know of any openings. They are based out of Illinois. So just because you live in Florida, doesnt mean you cant land a good paying position with a decent company.

Search and call around. Knock on some doors and see whats out there. Running team has got to suck IMO.

Hey Hurst I'm glad you're making money but that whole 1099 thing is a raw deal and your company is screwing you, no ifs and or buts. Yeah you might write everything off come tax time but in the long run it's a major rip off. Only time 1099 is fair is when you get paid 100 percent of the load and be the boss otherwise they're taking advantage big time.

That is so true, but very few people actually put pencil to paper to see the long run results. They only see the short term dollars.

In fact, paying 1099 may not even be legal. The IRS has very strict rules about who can be 1099 you should check into it. Also, you get screwed into paying both ends of your Social Security taxes (normally the employer pays 8.75%) and remembering to pay your quarterly taxes is a pain. It does, on the positive side, make for a nice fat paycheck.

It is not legal, it is just a matter of getting caught.

Stay away from big companies. Try Calex. They will hire out of that area. You'll make more money. They have an ad posted in the jobs part of this forum. And driving team is a nightmare. Bleech!
