So I broke down at the end of a off ramp one time and had the whole thing blocked with trucks behind me and truck would not start. An old timer came up and helped me out. You put the truck in 2nd or 3rd gear (depending how heavy you are) and release the clutch. Release the brakes and turn the key the starter will be cranking and will walk the truck to the shoulder or out of harms way.

Just had to do this recently when my tractor broke down on the I-5 in L.A. no shoulder and was about 60 feet from a off ramp. I was able to get in the Triangle between the ramp and the highway.

That's a good way to burn up a starter if you're not careful.

You got that right. Generally if your on flat ground and get it moving a little and throw it in neutral you can coast some also.

OH yeah be careful doing the started move. It's pretty heavy duty but as Socal said, once moving coast as far as possible and if you start to gain momentum try to pop the clutch to see if it might start.

Of course this will not work with an automatic!

Thats ok if you don't have a truck that requires the clutch to be pushed in to start. I had to over ride that "saftey feature" on my truck. Mostly because I warm the engine befor driving. I start, watch oil pressure, pretrip, run inside to hot coffee and log books for the next 10-15min. A burn starter is better than a ticket and tow truck for lane obstruction.

It's hard on the starter, but sometimes you have to do what you have to do. It's better than blocking the road.

...and cheaper than a tow truck.
