I had a driver who I suspected of stealling fuel, I know how my trucks do on fuel economy and when the one suddenly started using more fuel every week I knew what was going on.
I had no positive proof he was stealing, but had to let the driver go as I couldn't take a chance that he was stealing fuel.
Keep track of your fuel milage,
how to prevent drivers from stealing/selling fuel

Guess you've never watched how these lowlifes steal the fuel while sitting on the island?
They do the CB deal, a looser who isn't making it pulls in behind the theif and then they pull forward and the looser puts in what he bought from the thief Well they both are thieves but it's easier to identify which is which.
Then the card holder goes in and has a ticket showing it went into his tanks! Only the boss, if keeping up on the fuel in the truck, can tell whats going on. Now the thief CAN tell the boss he was siphoned and what can the boss do unless it becomes a trend. Even putting in those anti siphon screens don't do enough when a hammer and long screwdriver or crowbar just put a a hole in it that a hose will fit.
I've even seen in the past year of my driving a O/O pulled in next to a truck with a hose running from his side box with an electric pump and the hose in the other trucks tank just pumping away! The last set up I saw was a whopper! He had the hoses split so that the fuel was going into both of his tanks at the same time!
On both accounts I took a name and truck number and went in and let the desk announce what was going on. The TA actually called the police and well yep he got his arse busted! The other one the O/O got his butt kicked all over the lot! He was ripping off an L/P driver and not a company driver! Guess you learn the hard way! -
ronin Thanks this.

No company needs a driver who is either; A - a thief, B - careless enough to let this happen or C - this #### unlucky!
If the driver is actually caught in the act, then he should be prosecuted as well as fired. No company can afford to put up with this. Employee thefts ranks quite high for causing companies to go out of business.ronin Thanks this. -
my truck holds 200 gallons of fuel. Usually i fuel up 75 to 100 gallons at a time. My company operates trucks with as little as 160 to as much as 300 gallon capacities. My fuel card doesnt know if i have a 160 gallon day cab or a 300 gallon W900.
So if i was a thief, i just fuel up and hand the nozzle over to another driver. For a small price that goes into my pocket.
People get away with it for years before getting caught sometimes.
I'm on a dollar general dedicated run. Why don't i just crack open the DG trailer and sell some crap out of there too? Anyone who has ever worked for DG or pulled their trailers would know I'm refering to how strict they are on theft prevention. But ...WHY would someone steal from a DOLLAR STORE? What a useless place to even think of stealing from. Yeah, lets steal some $2 flip flops. OMG, $5 sunglasses! OH WAIT, $10 alarm clocks! Yeah! $5 on the black market! We even have to seal "empty" trailers because they're worried about stupid rolltainers being stolen..lol...ronin Thanks this. -
i confess i have bought fuel from a company driver for a buck a gallon, so up yours.
the company was arrow, and some of the cash i gave the driver bought him a bus ticket and food. ( i know cuz i dropped my trailer and took him to the bus station).
you guys are all high and mighty, and never even think there might be other circumstances involved. guys are sitting everywhere and making NOTHING to do it. companies insist they not idle even in freezing temps (but it's warm in the office) and some of these companies are still hiring, only at a reduced rate of pay, and even those drivers are getting less than 2 thousand miles a week. people who are hungry so crazy things, but, well, they are hungry...... -
We use the Wright Express program and I know we have the ability to view all of the transactions. I think you just have to be very on top of reviewing all of the purchases to make sure that there aren't multiples in one day, tank capacity overages, etc...
We've got 300 trucks in our fleet and the only way we can catch fuel theft via drivers abusing their fuel cards is to hunt it down. Sad but true.
If you are interested in siphoning solutions there is an anti-siphon valve you can install right into the neck of the fuel tank.ronin Thanks this. -
Then get defensive about doing it. PURE B.S. -
Ive done it and will do it again if I can get it for a buck a gallon! Most up here are saying it's stealing or someother crap but for me it goes to ethics. I haven't stole it I paid a buck a gallon for it, now does that make it right?, well no but hey I'm just doing whats best for MY bottom line so call me a theif I don't care. -
What would you be called if they caught you ?????
Since you paid a buck a gallon, that makes you Honest ?
I believe that you may be in trouble, perhaps stolen property????
Personally-I could never do it-For my bottom line !!!!!!!!!!!!!
