We have a fleet of 55 owner operators but our growth has stalled. We have very competitive benefits but we are having trouble finding new drivers to sign on?

What are the best ways to contact new drivers?

    Thanks

what company are you with. What do you offer. I'm always looking for something better.

Best ways to recruit are word of mouth. Also get a webpage if you don't already have one. Craigslist and other truck driver ad sites work to.

Question is, can you get drivers home reliably without them bobtailing to far? Can you provide a lot of mile with most of them being on highway? Are your pay rates consistent and high enough for drivers to make a good profit? Are your loads all heavy or do you have light freight. If you do well on those questions, word of mouth should get more O/O to sign on. Consider giving drivers business cards with a referral number on them that they can give out to anyone. Incentivise drivers by paying them if anyone joins with their referral number.

On your advertisements you need too post what you pay. Most O/O wont bother to call to find out. Have your ducks in a row, if you dont know the average weekly gross or yearly gross you need tooo calculate it. Ive passed a few companies by who couldnt give me the info. If you have slow times, be straight and tell us. Dont be deceptive, dont be arrogant.

You have 55 of either the best tools or the worse tools in your tool box at your fingertips. Your current drivers......

And you just shot yourself in the foot with...."competitive benefits" ok fine, you offer the same as the other guy.....why should I move and start at the bottom again?

    Or consider this.......

I can name you several carriers that have full waiting lists for O/O's and drivers.........and you don't, why not? Answer the question and fix the reason, problem and fill your roster with qualified and quality hands.

I always think it's helpful to take a step back and ask yourself honestly "Why would somebody come here?" What's the advantage- high paying freight? No touch freight? No sitting? Fast customers for loading and unloading? Light weight loads? Find what the best attribute of your company is and exploit it- spread the word thru your current guys and advertising. The business is so competitive, there has to be a reason to join you. I know of a small company in the midwest that has a shop and does work on O/O trucks at a really fair price(in today's market) and has several guys who like being able to get work done at the company shop and save money. What's your thing that seperates you from the rest? Find it and use it
