I have a 2009 386 with an ISX. It's my 1st DPF equipped truck. When I bought it no one explained to me how to regen it. There's a switch on the dash that has three positions. If I push it up and hold it nothing happens and it returns to the middle position. In the middle position it does nothing. In the down position a yellow light shaped as an oval comes on and stays on but nothing happens. As far as I know the engine has never regened sitting still. Occasionally it puts out some white smoke under load. When I look at the exhaust tips they look very sooty. There are no codes showing.
What I want to know is what position to run the switch in. It's been in the middle with the oval light off since I got the truck a few months ago. Maybe it is supposed to be run in the down position with the yellow oval light on? I just don't believe that it's regenning properly judging from the soot in the tips. Also the fuel mileage and power seem to be dropping bit by bit which also makes me think the DPF may be getting clogged up. Any input is appreciated!

I think you can't do a park regan unless your DPF light is on... I could be wrong

Hi,Mark, first you have to turn it on not always leave it on,stop the truck, press it up hold it for 10-15 second, then it will raise the rpm to 1200-1300, then wait for sensor to go off and rpm goes down to 600-7000 rpm, then u be ok.that mean urs dips filter regenerate properly.good luck.i have the same problem with mine too...

you can't regen untill the light comes on on the dash. as long as the light isn't on. you have nothing to worry about.
once the light comes on. you park the truck. push the switch UP and hold till the idle kicks up. takes 5 seconds for that to happen. then like above post mention. once it's done it'll shut down on it's own. bringing idle back to normal.
the down position shuts the regen off. for whatever reason you might need to shut it off for.
NEVER interrupt it though. becuase the regen won't conplete and you'll have to start the process all over again. last truck i was in was also a 09 pete. it took an hour and 15 minutes to complete the regen. if i interrupted it and started over. that started the clock all over again.
you more then likely won't see the light so much in the summertime. it's more of a problem in the winter. with the winter blend fuel and the water that's produced from the exhaust. the pete i was in. had drain holes in the mufflers for water building. by the time january was over. i had tons of yellow icicles hanging from the exhaust and steps. -
Can't help with "how to" on that truck, BUT if the DPF is working correctly there should be no soot exiting the exhaust system, so based on your description of sooty exhaust I think the DPF must be plugged up, not regenerating or something. Whatever is going on doesn't sound right.

Thanks for the replies! Today I took off the outlet exhaust pipe and looked inside the canister. It is as clean as a whistle in there! But the exhaust tips are all black and sooty... weird. I had turned them facing outward instead of rearward. Look goofy rearward to me. I wonder if the rearward position creates a low pressure area behind the pipe that helps to draw the exhaust out? There are those slots in the bottom of the tip and maybe that's what they are there for?

Hello. Would it mean something if my DPF light is on (2009PeteCUMMINS_ISX) and it won't do a regen? My check engine light is on as well, I'm thinking I need a whole DPF cleaning?, but everything's closed over Labor Day weekend, so I will go to Detroit peterbilt because I got a load delivering on Wednesday up in Ecorse..... I really just don't want to mess up my engine, could anyone tell me more about this?
(markvfl, not trying to hijack your post, I just bought mine recently to)
