I contacted the manager to have them pay for a flight. They said yes. Moment I got to the yard they disabled the truck and told me to get off and go home. No flight home after working 11 weeks. They terminated my contract for holding a load hostage.

They were holding my check hostage and didn't want to pay me. After not receiving pay on Monday, Tuesday, came Wednesday I said no more driving until you pay what I'm owed.

    Chicago based companies.... terrible choice.

The friend that recommended this company was making money before when rates were good.
Now market is bad and it's pinching pennies. No one should be hauling sub 2$ a mile rates. NO ONE.
Yet they don't care in Chicago. Last few weeks have been sub 2$ rates from dispatcher. Idk if he's pocketing money, company editing paperwork, and broker taking a slice? Don't know.

What I do know is the same freight I hauled last year isn't paying the same that it once was.

Plenty are in Canada. The actual based rate for average company in Canada ia $1.35 cpm. Some hype up $1.50 however might a lesser fuel discount and don't offer a fuel surcharge at all. And believe it or not this is a couple yeara ago I saw base rates at $1.50 cpm then in 2021. Its just the way it is up north here. Tons of new Canadian Owner Operators simply run for less because many have a 2 to 3 family household situation so leas funding over all is needed.

I remember meeting a Owner operator who told me he is working for $1.12 cpm (CAD) but the company covers insurance, tolls and ELD monthly expenses but not fuel. So unless he is driving a guarantee 3000 mi weekly after monthly plate expenses he might make $500/ weekly. Tons of crooks here however if you look hard enough some have fair rates.

the part I don't understand is the paying 1600$ a week or 83,000$ a year!! for a truck..
no matter what the rates are that's robbery. that's 6400 a month. Way more than a new truck payment you would own in the end

People are naive, especially if they are imported. Then we have a lot of domestic dummies as well. Never ever in time have we had all the information in our hands (smart phones) and been so blind and stupid. EVERYTHING can be Googled.

Unless a much older person who never embraced technology and the internet gets messed up in a situation, I don’t feel sorry for anyone.

Many don't read the contracts, they just sign them.
If I was him, I would go as hard as I can after these criminals.
First thing I'll do is to file a complaint against them with the Illinois Department of Labor.

Unless he was forced at gunpoint to sign the contract he just needs to chalk this up as a life lesson and know that from now on he should do a little bit of research before someone sells him on being his own boss. He’s been there 11 weeks. Freight rates were crap 11 weeks ago but yet somehow he thought he was still going to make money while paying a $1600 rental payment plus all expenses every week. It was a poor choice by the OP. If everything was spelled out ahead of time and that contract was still signed it doesn’t make the company criminal.
