cops make a high pay when they do detail work. which is why so many get on the detail list, and that goes by seniority. they retire after 25 years up here, so yeah, being in at say 25 years old, one can retire on a very nice pension at 50, and if (here) they claim disability due to stress or whatever, they get nearly a doubled monthly retirement checks. not too difficult for some to retire on well over $150.000 or more per year up here. . not too shabby.

Rookies are even making 50k where i'm from. Crazy amount of pay for a cop in a seasonal resort town. Town has like 5000 people in it on the off season but jumps to 6 figures in the summer for 4 months.

My Dad was a 30 year cop and retired in Sarasota, Fl in 1999. We have some heated discussions at times. Cops deal with a lot of BS though at the same time and truly arent out there just picking on people so dont disagree on good salaries but what I feel is wrong though great for him is he hasnt worked in 16 years and makes $5,500 a month on retirement and all healthcare paid. Like I said great for him but #### what about Truck Drivers and Fisherman, What about Electricians and plumber in places with no unions. But anyway being a cop in a semi rural town is a good gig

Police deal with a lot stuff no doubt and it's a tough job no doubt but so are a lot of other careers equally or more dangerous then being a police officer. I don't know the exact numbers on police fatalities a year but it's under a couple hundred a year. That is low compared to the deaths in the skilled trades and even this industry has more deaths per year then any other occupation. But this occupation and others don't get recognized as dangerous because the deaths are not by a bullets and these jobs are not considered "honorable" like some people think police are.

Oh no youre 100% correct. I agree, truck driving is a very dangerous job, steel workers, fisherman, smoke jumpers. I just dont think its fair any govt employee should get massive retirement checks for years after quitting while I do very well in my two dangerous jobs and when I walk away thats it.

I agree but a large part of society doesn't see what we (me soon) do as honorable. I was just driving through a shopping center with a movie theater that has a huge parking lot. The one side of the parking lot across the road is never used and surrounded by trees on 3 sides and has a sign "no overnight truck parking" Why is it so bad for a truck driver to park his truck there and get some zzz's? but a cop can sit there all day or at night? My point is truck drivers and other blue collar jobs are not respected at all.

I hear you man. Pisses me off watching a cop roll through a stop sign knowing he would ticket us.

There are several companies that offer Refresher Courses, where you ride with a trainer for a couple of weeks. Averitt Express is one. Chinatown would be a good one to see about the rest. Hes a great information source on here.
