I have a question, and believe me Im not trying to start crap. I just scratch my head when I read that some folks have a hard time shifting even after they have graduated from school. Why would anyone want to let you drive off with a very expensive piece of equipment when your not capable of handling a problem. You can drive from the valley floor to the top of Vail in just a short time (for example), and when you do it you better bring your A game. I would be ###### to let anyone leave my yard (if I had one) with my truck if he/she wasnt qualified to handle all situations. Ok Im done now.

One more thing for clarification. I dont blame the graduates as much as I do the schools and the fleet owners. I think they not only put the driver in danger, but also the folks around him/her.

A clutch is to be used for Starting and Stopping, everything else is a bad habit.

Why is everyone always having trouble with shifting...hell i did when I started...because nobody is taught the right way.

    UPSHIFTING 10 SPEED:

The shift point in the 10 speed is at 1450-1480 rpm...no matter what gear you are in.

Start out in 1st if loaded on an incline--no matter how steep---2nd will suffice if on level ground...if the truck shutters as you start off, you should be one gear lower...start off gear is quick, just enough to get rolling, then watch the tach...remember 1450 shift point, every gear! Never apply throttle when getting the rig rolling...the newer engines are designed to do the work, just ease out the clutch, as she starts to roll, clutch completely out...take your foot off the clutch pedal...it isn't a foot rest!

    DOWN SHIFTING:

In the 10 speed, the bottom rpm's for each gear is between 1180-1320, if you start your downshift when the tach hits 1350, it should go smooth.

Remember, you are supposed to be watching your gauges, mirrors, and close proximity traffic...so the tach is part of the gauge group, you should be watching (and listening, learn that engine sound, then you can back off the tach watching since you are tuned into the sound). At 1350, clutch in (2-2.5 inches, just enough to slide out of gear into neutral), burp the throttle to bring the rpm's up to about 15-1600, clutch in, gear in. Don't be in a hurry, find the rhythm, you should be dancing with your truck, now I mean a waltz, not break dancing. For you Texans and cowboys out there, the 2 step is good too!

Keep in mind, there is a slight pause in the neutral position...both up and down...only slight remember, never in a hurry, those gears aren't going anywhere, they are in a case bolted shut! And please, keep your feet on the floor, those pedals aren't stools to rest your feet on.

Even the oldest driver is going to grind a gear now and then, don't let the noise or the feel in the shift stick bother you, it's no big deal to grind one now and then, but every gear means you need practice. Find an empty parking lot, warehouse yard, someplace with ample room. Start at the bottom, go through your gears...1-2-3-4-5-4-3-2-1...driving in circles...don't look for speed, look for smooth shifting...nothing gets accomplished without practice. You can do the same with your backing...ever thought about that one...the most complex thing we do is the thing we do the least of...so practice! and the day will come where you just can't hit that dock, or get the trailer to go where you want...don't be afraid to ask for some help...if you let others know that you need some help, there is always someone willing to help...trust me, I've been there..just ask!

I do not EVER want to even get near an automatic in a truck!:protest:

If DOT didn't have so many regulations these days I would much rather learn shifting old school. :thumbleft:

Now that they have the 10 down pat, let 'em at the Super10, and let the grinding sounds recommence! :)

Great! But tell me, who warrants the kind of insult the so called angry old guy dished out here? The unnecessary pissedoffness on this board is really getting out of hand.

You as well as I can only be accountable for what we post. The Mods do a good job of keeping peace. If you have concerns tell a Moderator. I have Pm'ed GuysLady,or Baack in the past with questions,or requests for locked threads to be re-opened. They are quick to respond and explain why things are the way they are at times. Mastertech has also responded to my concerns.
My point is communicate with Mods if you have issues with the Forum. Do not let a few un-friendly posts ruin your time on here. Be accountable for your own posts and If you need help contact a MOD. IT has always worked for me.
