How do you keep these internationals from shutting down after 10 minutes? I froze to death last night in Massachusetts! And the bunk heater, I played with it last night and it didn't work then it suddenly came on when I was half asleep which kept me warm for a bit then I turned the key have way to check the quelcomm for messages and it shut off, the bunk heater.
How to stop International from shutting off after 5 minutes?

When you are idling, are you using the cruise control to idle it up to around 1000 rpm or a little more? If you are, and it still shuts off, there isn't much you can do about it because your company has programmed it that way to reduce idle costs.
zoekatya Thanks this. -
Check the antifreeze level. One international had a leak and would shut down when it was down a gallon. But not when doing 10+ mph.

TexTrucker is exactly right. If you are using cruise and it still shuts off it's a company programming issue. If not set your cruise to between 900 and 1000 rpms and it should run constant. Also sometimes their is an override switch on the dash that you can use to override the shutdown process. I hope this helps.

If high idle even works in the first place. They can change the ECM settings to disable high idle, as well.

Wait until you see the idle shut down idiot light on the instrument cluster then push clutch to the floor. Ignore the idle shut down warning on the QC.

Listen up, let me set you straight:
1. After 5 minutes, a light saying "IDLE SHUT DOWN" will pop up on the dash, when it happens, press and hold the brake pedal, or push the clutch to the floor. My company they shut down after 5 minutes but they have allowed it to be over ruled by pressing the brake pedal.
2. The bunk heater - Typically it only works with the key OFF, when you turn it to accessory or on it will shut off. I don't know if you have a Webasto or Espar heater, but if you have the Espar heater there is a thermostat, TURN IT UP to around 75 degrees. The heater will run and typically the fan will slow and the heat out put will slow so you don't turn into a sweat shop.
3. If you leave the ignition key on, the QC will not shut off. If the engine is off and you turn the key on, the QC will come on, but once the key is off it shuts off after about 10 minutes. If you start the truck, then shut the truck off after the QC has booted, it will shut off after 3 hours.
Hope this helps. -
#2 depends on how they have it wired. Our Espars work with the key in either position, and, if that's the case, you want to be cautious to NEVER start the truck while the Espar heater is running, because it can - and often will - flood the heater.
The Espars are very fickle.. one bad cell in one bad battery, and they won't work. -

Or get a hold of one of these. It's what I use when I'm checking brake lights, adjusting a clutch, etc. You should be able to find them at O'Reilly, NAPA, Auto Zone, Advanced Auto Parts, etc.
