does anyone suggest NOT reading the DMV manual and taking their end of chapter "test", but rather would it be smarter to take 3rd party CDL tests, not study, and just study your wrong answers? and take other versions of practice tests? Couldn't you just memorize all the answers and skip over all the reading? Also is there an oral exam?

RTFQ, Read the info. Memorize the oral as you have to complete it w/o any checklist.

How did you ever get out of high school?
Shaggy Thanks this. -
Sure, you can memorize the answers.
Study the DMV manual.
The answers are also on this forum; go to the top of the page and click on "CDL Practice Tests." -

I can say from my experience, I would read and take both tests online... If i had to guess the tests will have a couple of questions from both... When i took the test for my CDL ( In Missouri ) the written was 3 tests... 1- General knowlege ( common sence driving ) 2- ( hardest for me ) air brakes 3- Coupling ( hooking trailer ) ....
Im sure you will be ok.... and for the oral exam I dont think so? Good luck -
is there an oral exam? or just written true/false or multiple choice for get my temp? how many days to study if studying for 1 hour a day. Seems like it might take me a week or two at this rate

No oral exam. It is a touch screen test. You do not need to study for it at all. In fact you can just go take it. All the questions are common sense with the exception of knowing the weights and such. There should be a book at the DMV and looking up the numbers for gross weights only takes a second or so.
If you fail you can turn around and take it again. -
For the cdl i read the actual manual because thats what my school had me do. But after i obtained my cdl i went back to get my doubles/triples and tanker endorsements. For those two i didnt open the cdl manual once. I just took practice tests on TTR (among other sites) several times. Then i made flash cards on the ones i still missed until i got 100% no matter what test i took and no matter what site it was on. As you might guess i passed both endorsements with flying colors and threw a ####### party in the dmv.
.
There is no reason the same method can't be applied for the actual cdl permit test.

Which reminds me. My pops just sent me a pictext of a letter(cuz im out on the road now) from the tsa giving me permission to get my hazmat. So while you are studying for your cdl i have a little studying to do myself good sir.
